Vatican tightens checks on weeping Madonnas that multiply pizzas

The Pope has cracked down on Church endorsements of statues of the Virgin Mary that allegedly weep blood and perform miracles, even if they draw huge crowds.

In a new document issued on Friday, the Vatican ruled that only the Pope, not bishops, will on rare occasions rubber stamp supposed supernatural events including the stigmata, when a person suffers mysterious cuts similar to Christ’s wounds on the cross.
