Donald Trump has launched vigorous attacks on voting by mail. His relentless assault on the integrity of mail-in balloting has cast a shadow over the confidence of American voters. Our recent investigation suggests that Trump’s false claims also had reverberations across the border, influencing how some Canadians view mail-in ballots.
We find a significant trust divide in voting by mail in Canada between those most likely sympathetic to Trump’s political pronouncements — for example, Canadians holding right-wing populist views — and other Canadians. The trust gap is also much wider among Canadians exposed to U.S.-based media.
