A recent article describes the USA as being in a moral and philosophical freefall. The writer concludes with the grim summary statement “We are well along the way to becoming the next failed society.” The author lists five failures in various sectors of our culture: indebtedness, poor education, shift away from being a manufacturing economy, cultural balkanization, and lack of common or shared goals. He also expresses a profound and needed concern about the indifference to a conscious preference for certain philosophers who once were taught and/or more revered than they are today – men like Thomas Aquinas, John Locke, and Immanuel Kant.
