Canadian demonstrators held, passports confiscated ahead of planned global march to Egypt-Gaza border

More than 40 Canadians planning to participate in the global march to Gaza, alongside thousands of other foreign activists, have been detained in Egypt and had their passports confiscated by authorities, organizers told CBC News.

A group of 83 Canadians arrived in Cairo on Wednesday and Thursday, ahead of the scheduled march to Egypt’s border with Gaza, an attempt to draw attention to the deepening humanitarian crises facing Palestinians under Israel’s blockade of the war-torn territory more than 20 months after attacks began.

Liberal Gov’t calls on Israel to stop embarrassing their Mullah pals and surrender

Call on Canadian government to protect Jewish community

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand has called for an end to the escalating military confrontation between Israel and Iran following Israeli strikes on Iranian military targets and Iran’s launch of unmanned aerial vehicles toward Israeli territory.

In a statement released Friday, Anand said Canada is closely monitoring the rise in regional tensions and stressed that continued military action could trigger a broader regional conflict with devastating consequences.

In contrast, Opposition Leader and head of the Conservative Party Pierre Poilievre defended Israel’s right to defend itself, including by targeting Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, which he said carries the potential for genocide.

Iranian missiles fired at Israel

Iranian missiles streaked across the sky above Israel after Tehran retaliated with a barrage of rockets.

The Israeli army has ordered all citizens to head to shelters after it said it had identified projectiles being launched from Iran.

Note I can’t vouch for this video but given it’s prevalence on X it may be legit.

Bluesky is a ‘Hateful’ Place in a Downward Spiral

There are several new stories circulating today about Bluesky and all of them describe it as an unpleasant place, including the one written by two Bluesky fans at Slate. We’ll get back to Slate in a moment but first the Washington Post’s Megan McArdle may have kick started this trend at the start of this week when she wrote a column pointing out that Bluesky isn’t doing so well.

As it hosts G7, Canada under pressure to further boost military spending by tens of billions

Canada is facing hard budget choices as it plays host to the Group of Seven summit starting Sunday and prepares for a looming NATO meeting where Western allies will be asked to commit to further defence spending hikes in the face of rising threats from Russia and other rivals.

Defence and security will be an underlying theme at the G7 forum in Kananaskis, Alta., where all but one of the member countries also belong to the NATO military alliance, which is poised to cement a new defence spending pact at The Hague one week later.

History tells us not to believe any of Carney’s promises.

What could have caused the Air India plane crash? The theories explored

Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and his first officer were in charge of an aircraft that was refusing to climb after their Boeing 787 took off at Ahmedabad airport in India.

Video of the take-off showed the airliner halting its climb and beginning to sink seconds after pulling away from runway 23. The pilots made a mayday call to controllers, alerting them to a distress situation, about 60 seconds after starting their take-off roll.

Pilots trying to understand the events that led the 787-8 series airliner to lose lift and struggle to stay airborne, before slamming into a building, considered a loss of engine thrust as a possible cause. They focused, however, more on an anomaly: the abnormal configuration of the wing flaps and landing gear. Some veteran pilots speculated that the take-off flaps had been retracted by mistake.

Very proud to be Canadian? That’s less likely now for supporters of one party, survey suggests

OTTAWA–With U.S President Donald Trump making economic and expansionist threats against his northern neighbours, a new survey suggests that pride in being Canadian has increased among supporters of all federal parties – except Conservatives.

The number of Canadians who feel proud of their country has rebounded overall, according to research shared exclusively with the Star from the Environics Institute, with 62 per cent now indicating that they are very proud to be Canadian, compared to 53 per cent who said the same last September.

The Star has a hard time distinguishing between patriotism and the ersatz flag waving baloney we witnessed during the election, much of it by the same folks happy to see Sir john A in a box.

Trump DHS Asks Kim Kardashian ‘Which Convicted Child Molesters, Murderers, Rand Rapists Would You Like to Stay‘ in America

The Department of Homeland Security fired back at reality TV star Kim Kardashian, who took a hammer to ICE deportations on Tuesday, accusing ICE of “ripping people from their families.”

The ill-informed celebrity — who is mostly just famous for being famous — urged her fans to protest against Immigration and Customs Enforcement for daring to enforce federal immigration laws, saying, “when we witness innocent, hardworking people being ripped from their families in inhumane ways, we have to speak up.”

Prime Minister Mark Carney has a plan to sabotage the construction of new oil and gas pipelines in Canada by handing a veto to Canada’s most anti-energy premier.

During this spring’s election campaign, Carney tried his best to sound like a moderate. He talked about the need for Canada to become an energy superpower and insisted big projects need to be approved faster.

Israeli ‘decapitation strikes’ wiped out top military command

Israel has launched a series of stunning strikes against Iran, aiming to cripple Tehran’s nuclear programme and its military leadership.

The IDF said about 200 jets were involved in striking around 100 targets on Friday morning, which appeared to include senior members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and top nuclear scientists.

Those killed included Hossein Salami, commander-in-chief of the powerful IRGC, and Mohammad Bagheri, chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces, according to reports.

Potentially more potential graves found potentially

… On Thursday, English River announced that a ground-penetrating radar search at the site that began in 2021 has identified dozens more anomalies at the site of the school.

An estimated 150,000 First Nations, Inuit and Métis children were forced to attend the government-funded, church-run residential schools across Canada, which were largely overseen by the Catholic Church. The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation has recorded the names of more than 4,000 who died, but many experts believe the number to be higher.
