Trump’s talk of a Canadian “faucet” has Columbia River Basin residents on edge

The September backdrop was drought and the 2024 California wildfires. The location was Donald Trump’s expensive Los Angeles golf course. The words uttered by the Republican presidential candidate were that the Columbia River Basin was “essentially a very large faucet” and if all that water was diverted from the Pacific Ocean, “all of that water would come … right into Los Angeles.”

Disentangle from Europe

Marine Le Pen was just banned from running for president of France for five years. That’s more like forever. Le Pen is deemed a criminal and sentenced to wear an electronic tag for a couple years. A French court claims she embezzled. But why would we believe a French court any more than we believe a Manhattan or D.C. district court? Trump’s been through those wringers.

Macron and his mates did to Le Pen what Romanian elites did to Calin Georgescu, the populist candidate for president there. Reportedly, he was the frontrunner. If you smell a rat, you’re right.

Killing a Kingdom

Britain is great no more.

I dreamed the other night that I was wanted by the British police. And in the dream I wasn’t even in Britain. I was in New York, where I’d attracted the attention of British authorities by putting up a political poster, or something like that. But even though I was outside of their jurisdiction, the British police were after me. They were going to arrest me, put me on trial, and have me jailed for my opinions. I was apparently facing two to three years in the hoosegow. Such, in my dream, was the reach of British “justice.”

It was a nice dream to wake up from.

The invasion of America’s cringe academics

We don’t want their cowardly cosplayers

Many of us born post-1945 have wondered at some point how we might deal with an approaching fascist threat. Luckily, we have three preeminent American scholars of fascism to help advise us. And the answer from Professors Jason Stanley, Timothy Snyder, and Marcia Shore seems to be: run away.

Stanley, the philosopher-author of How Fascism Works, says he is leaving the States for Canada because of the oppressive political climate. Historian Shore, who writes about totalitarianism and is married to fellow historian Snyder of On Tyranny fame, pronounces herself “heartbroken at what has happened to my own country”. All three were at Yale, and soon will be at the University of Toronto; safely away from Trump’s targeting of DEI policies, and the recent slashing and burning of university funding. His rationale, insofar as anyone can discern it, is combatting antisemitism on campus, though what the exact connection is supposed to be is not entirely clear.

When Left Is Too Left in a Canada Rattled by Trump

As Canada faces an election defined by President Trump’s threats, its progressive party, the New Democrats, finds itself losing support and confronting an existential crisis.

The pain of having teeth pulled and gums prodded for denture fittings was followed by relief at the payment counter: The $4,000 worth of work would cost Ron Brydges nothing under Canada’s new national dental care program.

“This dental plan being free was just a godsend,” said Mr. Brydges, 84, a retired industrial mechanic in St. Catharines, Ontario.

For that, Canadians largely have the leftist New Democratic Party to thank.

Le Pen Backers to Protest in Paris on Sunday

French Left condemns march for democracy as “fascist threat”

France’s right-wing Rassemblement National (RN) has called for a demonstration in Paris on Sunday, April 6th, in support of Marine Le Pen. The planned protest—which follows Le Pen’s conviction, prison sentence, and disqualification from running in the 2027 presidential election—has provoked the anger of the Left, which called it a “fascist” threat. Despite this, the RN, supported by a public statement from Donald Trump, claims that its membership has exploded in the space of a few days.

SNELL: Rogan confirms Canadians’ worst nightmare — malevolence in Ottawa

Internationally recognized podcaster Joe Rogan, who has more viewers than most American mainstream media outlets combined — says he won’t return to Canada even though he thinks Canadians are “f—ing lovely.”

Rogan called-out the communist-like seizure of Canadians’ bank accounts without due process during the COVID-19 Freedom Convoy — later ruled illegal by the Federal Court of Canada, during an episode of the The Joe Rogan Experience.

All the Ukrainian Known Knowns

Aside from the rhetoric, there is a growing consensus among Western diplomats, military analysts, military officers, heads of state, and even much of the media about how to end the endless Ukrainian war.

A proposed peace will see a DMZ established somewhere along an adjusted 1,200-mile Ukraine-Russia border. Tough negotiations will adjudicate how far east toward its original borders Russian forces will be leveraged to backstep.

Pierre Poilievre has a problem with women. Mark Carney has a problem with men

It is nearly impossible to win a federal election unless you are able to attract two key constituencies of “swing voters” — blue collar workers and new Canadians.

This formula has been the key to the Liberals’ success and the Conservatives’ failure in the last three federal elections and has reshaped how all parties campaign.

This time around, however, it appears another cleavage in federal politics could be even more important in determining the outcome.

Carney and Poilievre have very different ideas for a new deal with Trump

Every political leader in Canada has declared U.S. President Donald Trump an unreliable partner who is reneging on the USMCA trade deal that he signed, so you have to question why the leading election contenders would rush to negotiate a new deal with him.

Liberal Leader Mark Carney and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre both now say they would launch negotiations immediately after the coming election, not just on trade but on the broad defence and security relationship, too.

Yet those two leaders have very different ideas of what a new deal would be.
