I Just Got Done with LGBTQ+ and Diversity and Inclusion Training

I work nights for a government contractor on a federal base. Tonight we had a mandatory training that I just got out of a couple of hours ago. It has become clear that if you want to hold a job that isn’t your own small business, or at another small business owned by like-minded people, then your views aren’t welcome if you hold any kind of traditional view regarding sexuality, gender, society, and nationhood. Is this the “free market?” It doesn’t feel free. It feels like oppression. The same way you couldn’t participate in Soviet society if you didn’t conform to the state religion is how we are now. We aren’t a free country. Hell, if you own your own small business, and make your views even minimally known against the queer religion of the US government, then you aren’t safe either. Good luck staying open or staving off audits and indictments and lawsuits.

Planned riots, scripted news stories, corruptly installed officials, checks and balances bypassed as so much “red tape,” declared states of emergencies: the tools of the N.I.C.E. might have come across as unlikely scenarios to Lewis’ original readers. To a reader who has suffered through 2020, 2021, and 2022, it reads like current events. Particularly painful is the sanitation work of the institute, hell-bent upon improving “health” at the expense of much of what makes life livable and dignified.

Trying to Prove You’re Not a Racist

Since I started writing this newsletter, once about every couple of weeks I have received a missive from someone troubled by a controversy involving race, usually in the workplace.

These readers feel that their opponents in these fusses are unfairly tarring them as racist. Typical disputes they find themselves embroiled in include whether a school program should devote itself centrally to antiracism, whether it is fair to hire people ranking skin color over qualifications, whether reparations for slavery in a local context are appropriate and what they should consist of, and whether a piece of art should be deemed racist.

Spring of 2022 was a challenging period for Ukraine, particularly for those territories that were invaded by the Russian army. It was a time of uncertainty. Striking from Belarus, the invading forces came dangerously close to the capital. They moved more slowly than anticipated, meeting heavy resistance every step of the way. Still, they were greater in number, and the Ukrainian military was not as prepared as it should have been, given the threat dating back to 2014. Russian casualties did not stop their convoys from moving south. One by one, small towns and villages were occupied. Kyiv, however, proved to be a much tougher target; Russians were stopped a few kilometres away from the city’s outskirts.
