‘Freedom Rally’ Heats Up in Calgary as Supporters, Counter-Protesters Confront Each Other

CALGARY—A protest close to downtown Calgary grew heated when demonstrators against government COVID-19 mandates came face-to-face with counter-protesters at a park where weekly “freedom rallies” have been held on Saturdays for months.

A heavy Calgary police presence, including mounted and bicycle officers, was on hand to keep the event at Central Memorial Park in the Beltline neighbourhood under control on March 19.

Despite a largely peaceful gathering, several heated confrontations and an arrest were observed.

Ontario reports 3 new COVID-19 deaths, as mask mandate set to end

Ontario reported three new COVID-19 deaths on Sunday, the last day before mask mandates end in most indoor public spaces throughout the province.

The Ministry of Health says all three deaths occurred sometime in the past 30 days.

There have been 76 deaths reported due to COVID-19 in Ontario in the past seven days and 496 in the past 30 days.

COVID-19 hasn’t gone anywhere in Canada — and we could still see another surge

COVID-19 may no longer be top of mind for Canadians, but there are still more cases and hospitalizations now than at some of the worst points of the pandemic — and while we may have moved on, the virus definitely hasn’t.

Canada has lifted almost all public health measures as COVID-19 levels continue to drop from the peak of the devastating Omicron wave that overwhelmed testing capacity and fuelled a record surge in hospitals across the country.

Ukraine says Russia bombed school used as shelter in besieged city of Mariupol

LVIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian authorities said Sunday that Russia’s military bombed an art school sheltering some 400 people in the embattled port city of Mariupol, where Ukraine’s president said an unrelenting Russian siege would be remembered for centuries to come.

It was the second time in less than a week that city officials reported a public building where residents had taken shelter coming under attack. A bomb hit a Mariupol theater with more than 1,300 believed to be inside on Wednesday, local officials said.

At least one dead, 20 hurt in mass shooting at Arkansas event promoting non-violence

DUMAS, Ark. – (UPDATE – 12:00 A.M.) Chief Keith Finch with the Dumas Police Department said one person was killed and at least 20 others were injured in the shooting incident outside of a car show Saturday evening.

The shooting happened outside of the 16th annual “Hood-Nic” event held by the Delta Neighborhood Empowerment Youth Organization. One of the organizers of the event said the gathering was an attempt to promote nonviolence.

And as all this is unfolding, al-Qaeda has published a new online magazine encouraging jihad terrorists to immigrate to the United States and commit massacres here. It looks as if yet another Biden-caused disaster is in the offing.

Once again we are indebted to the Frontier Centre for Public Policy and retired judge Brian Giesbrecht for their diligent research that has unearthed the proportions of some of the embellished claims about Canada’s past treatment of its Indigenous population and particularly some of the claims made by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) about “missing children.” There is no doubt that there are very serious legitimate grievances that Aboriginal people rightfully hold about the wrongs committed against them in Canada, including very serious abuses that were perpetrated against children in the residential school system. But all Canadians of European extraction are the subject of blood libels by the TRC and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and former Supreme Court chief justice Beverley McLachlin and others of comprehensive racism and genocidal intent against this country’s Indigenous people.

Even if you think Russia has some legitimate grievances, this war thing is not good. M’kay? It’s a horrible waste of life and property, and it will hardly just be the civilians of Ukraine and Russia paying a steep economic price. But it would never have happened if Russia couldn’t afford the world’s third-largest military — with only the 11th-largest GDP. Where is it getting the hard currency to oil that war machine (pun intended)? It’s essentially fossil fuel exports to our NATO allies, and especially the largest of them, Germany. And yes, even some exports to the United States.

America is learning the art of humility. That’s a good thing for the rest of the world.

The country that began this century by invading not one but two countries, has become more modest in the face of the nightmare that is Ukraine. Forget shock and awe, this is the era of caution and apprehension. That’s what having no good options will do for you.

Friday’s two-hour phone call with China’s President Xi, superpower to superpower, was a sign of how hard it will be for America to stop this war. The US’s leverage over China is limited, and readouts from both sides suggest the call didn’t achieve much. But it was part of an orchestrated diplomatic strategy that contrasts with much of the first year of Joe Biden’s presidency.

They’re learning what a fuck-up they elected.

If platitudes were air defence missiles, praise was anti-tank rockets, applause was fighters, and wishes and prayers were weapons, after this week’s address to Canada’s Parliament, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would have been able to plan his country’s victory parade over Russia. Sadly, what was on display Tuesday was Canada’s unrelenting drive to provide Zelenskyy and Ukraine with complete assistance short of real help. A close friend, who believes in prayer, says that if you actually do something to give wings to that prayer you can achieve something greater. President Zelenskyy has given us an opening, a chance to put wings on our prayers for Ukraine, to achieve something greater.
