Salman Abedi punching a female student after a row about her wearing a short skirt could have been a red flag to his radicalisation, an inquiry has heard.

Abedi, who killed 22 people in the Manchester Arena bombing, hit the girl in the face at Manchester College.

The inquiry heard there was a pattern of those convicted of Islamist extremist offences also having a history of violence towards women.

Dr Matthew Wilkinson said Abedi had a “very bad attitude towards women”.

That’s racist! Beating up women is his culture!

‘Not fitting their narrative’: Waukesha feels abandoned after tragic parade attack

WAUKESHA, Wis. — For her whole life, 67-year-old Sharon Millard was so shy she used to ask her identical twin sister to go on dates in her place in high school.

But ever since Nov. 21, when Darrell Brooks allegedly plowed into dozens of people at the Waukesha Christmas parade, killing six people, including an 8-year-old boy, and injuring up to 60 others, Millard has felt compelled to speak about the atrocity she witnessed.

One of the people killed was Millard’s fellow “Dancing Granny” — 79-year-old Virginia “Ginny” Sorenson — who was tossed up in the air like a rag doll by Brooks’s SUV, police say.

Omicron: Why do boosters work if two doses struggle?

The heavily mutated Omicron variant has led to a serious dent in the ability of vaccines to protect us from catching the Covid virus.

Two doses of some vaccines offer almost no protection from an Omicron infection, although they should still greatly reduce the risk of becoming so ill you need hospital care.

The vaccines were all developed to fight the first form of the virus that emerged two years ago.

So can a third or “booster” dose of those original vaccines make the difference or has Omicron already outwitted the protection they can give?

I remain skeptical

People think fairly linearly, and we like to feel rational by making decisions on the basis of large quantities of data, gathered carefully over time.

It is unintuitive to think exponentially. Yet, understanding exponential growth of infection is absolutely key to responding to and mitigating pandemics. This is because the amount of harm increases so quickly, and the economic and social costs of mitigating that harm rise alongside it.

Former space agency engineer charged by Mounties for ChiCom links oversaw major Canadian projects

Wanping Zheng, who was charged last week in what police are calling “a matter of foreign actor interference,” claimed publicly to have overseen a number of major Canadian aerospace projects.

Last week the RCMP charged 61-year-old Wanping Zheng of Brossard, Que. with breach of trust. He’s accused of using his status as an engineer at the Canadian Space Agency to negotiate satellite station installation agreements with Iceland on behalf of a Chinese aerospace company. Documents filed in court show the alleged crime happened back in 2018.

“We do consider this to be a matter of foreign actor interference,” RCMP Inspector David Beaudoin, the officer in charge of operations for the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) in Quebec, said late last week.

GOLDSTEIN: Freeland announces monetary policy Trudeau doesn’t think about

Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced Canada’s monetary policy framework for the next five years on Monday, odd given that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said during the election campaign he doesn’t think about monetary policy.

Freeland, representing the Trudeau government, and Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem representing its governing council, jointly agreed that Canada’s annual inflation target will be 2%, with a range of 1% to 3%, from 2022 to 2026.

Ontario reports 1,429 new COVID-19 cases, 5 more deaths

Ontario reported more than 1,400 new COVID-19 cases and five more virus-related deaths on Tuesday as the test positivity rate hit a high not seen in nearly seven months.

Another 1,429 new coronavirus infections were reported today, down from 1,536 on Monday but up from 928 a week ago.

With case counts on the rise over the past month, the seven-day rolling average continues to climb and hit 1,400 today, compared to 975 a week ago.

European country bans booze to tackle Omicron

Norway has banned the sale of alcohol in bars and restaurants in an effort to curb the spread of the Covid-19 Omicron variant, which continues to push infections in the country on a sharp rise.

New Covid-19 rules will prohibit the sale of alcohol at bars, restaurants, and other service-based venues from Wednesday, while Norwegians are also being urged to work from home if possible.

“Infection rates in Norway are increasing sharply, and we have now gained new knowledge about the omicron variant and how fast it can spread. We are in a more serious situation,” declared Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, who claimed that the “stricter measures” were necessary “to maintain control of the pandemic.”

Full disclosure. I booked a Booster shot – earliest I could get is Dec 23 by which point if predictions are correct we will be dominated by Omicron. Fab. I was invited to Christmas at my brother’s. He is holding on but his condition continues its now accelerated, unrelenting assault. At this point I wonder if exposing him to the risk of infection is wise. We’ll abide by his decision.

If you let it, much of your daily practice follows specialty guidelines, insurance company criteria, hospital formularies, and other annoyances. None of those entities have any liability when it comes to our patients. For the most part, liability lies with the treating physician.

Inger Stoejberg: Jail for Danish ex-minister for asylum separations

A former Danish immigration minister has been found guilty of illegally separating young asylum-seeking couples in a landmark impeachment trial.

Judges ruled Inger Stoejberg’s decision in 2016 to separate couples was unlawful and jailed her for 60 days.

Ms Stoejberg said she was very surprised by the verdict as the policy was designed to combat child marriage.

The case was Denmark’s first impeachment trial in three decades and only the sixth in its history.

In my home state of California, smash-and-grab is fast becoming a way of life. Crime is a rampant, daily occurrence. Just this week, two of my close friends were robbed near San Francisco.

One owns a popular restaurant; the front door was destroyed, and the cash register robbed. The other was renting a car, the entire rear window of which was smashed to bits and the contents swiped. So common is this sort of looting and thievery that when he returned the rental car, he noticed that the car company’s lot was full of vehicles with broken windows.

China is paying American social media influencers to promote the Beijing Olympics and tout U.S.-China cooperation on climate change, according to government filings.

The Chinese consulate in New York City hired the public relations firm Vippi Media to run the influence campaign, according to disclosures filed with the Justice Department under the Foreign Agents Registration Act. For $300,000, Vippi Media will hire prominent Instagram, TikTok, and Twitch users to tout the games and promote China-U.S. cooperation on issues like climate change, the contract says.

An Idaho church has replaced a stained glass window of Robert E Lee, George Washington and Abe Lincoln with the country’s first black Methodist bishop wearing an LGBTQ scarf.

The late bishop Leontine Kelly, who passed away at age 92 in 2012, had lived in Richmond, Virginia with her family where monuments of former Confederate leaders, such as Lee, had lined Monument Avenue.

The statue of Lee, a former Civil War general and slave owner, was later removed by the city on September 8.
