The Narges Foundation said Ms Mohammadi, 53, was detained in the eastern city of Mashhad, along with other activists.

The Nobel Committee said it was “deeply concerned by today’s brutal arrest of Narges Mohammadi” and called on the authorities “to immediately clarify Mohammadi’s whereabouts, ensure her safety and integrity, and to release her without conditions”. Iran does not appear to have commented.

Oh sure ….

She says — as Canadians face rising living costs, ongoing challenges in finding affordable housing, and increasing pressure on public services — refugees and newcomers have too often been unfairly cast as scapegoats for deeper systemic issues.

“We often focus on the demand side … and we don’t look enough at the supply side,” said Clark-Kazak. “People who are coming to this country are also trained as doctors, engineers and construction workers who could build housing.”

Met will not investigate claims against Andrew relating to Virginia Giuffre

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor will not be the subject of a criminal investigation in Britain over allegations he had sex in London with a teenager who was trafficked, and then put pressure on his police protection officer to dig up dirt on her.

The Metropolitan police on Saturday said after weeks of review, it would not launch any formal criminal investigation into King Charles’s brother. Mountbatten-Windsor’s ties to the convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein led to the stripping of his royal status.

Ontario judge questions U.S. case against Deepak Paradkar at bail hearing

An Ontario Superior Court justice repeatedly questioned the strength of evidence Friday against a Toronto-area lawyer facing extradition to the United States on charges tied to fugitive and alleged cocaine kingpin Ryan Wedding.

During a bail hearing for Deepak Paradkar, Justice Peter Bawden pushed back on Crown submissions that if the suspended lawyer were released pending the outcome of his extradition hearing, he would be a flight risk.

Margareta Dovgal: Liberals twisted themselves into pretzels over their own pipeline MOU

The plan isn’t designed to succeed

Playing politics with pipelines is a time-honored Canadian tradition. Tuesday’s events in the House of Commons offered a delightful twist on the genre.

The Conservatives introduced a motion quoting the Liberals’ own pipeline promises laid out in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Alberta, nearly verbatim. The Liberals, true to form, killed it 196–139 with enthusiastic help from the NDP, Bloc, and Greens.

Two US soldiers and a US civilian interpreter have been killed in Syria in an ambush by an Islamic State gunman, the US Central Command has said.

Officials said three other service members were injured in the attack, during which the gunman was “engaged and killed”.

In a post on X, the US Central Command said the attack was “the result of an ambush by a lone ISIS gunman”, while a Pentagon official said initial assessments showed the attack was likely to be carried out by the Islamic State group.

Canadian hate speech law ‘would criminalise biblical passages’

Planned changes to Canada’s hate speech law would criminalise biblical passages, critics have claimed.

Under Canada’s criminal code, anyone found guilty of “wilful promotion of hatred” faces up to two years in jail.

But it also says that prosecution should not apply to a statement made in “good faith” and “based on belief in a religious text”.

Is British civilisation really being erased?

Mass migration risks making the UK and its neighbours ‘unrecognisable’. America could one day cut them loose

Donald Trump’s description of Europe, offered in an interview with Politico last week, was characteristically blunt: “What they’re doing with immigration is a disaster.” Unless this changes, some nations “will not be viable countries any longer”, with politicians like Sadiq Khan “elected because so many people have come in. They vote for him now”.

It was an assessment that came hard on the heels of the Trump administration’s National Security Strategy, which warned that Europe would be “unrecognisable in 20 years” and risked “civilisational erasure”.

Donald Trump has a plan for America’s place in the world. What is Mark Carney’s vision for Canada?

The promise of a new and long-awaited national security strategy would be laughable if it were not so late in coming

OTTAWA — The promise, yet again, that Canada will soon produce a new and long-awaited national security strategy would be laughable if it were not so late in coming, a perennial work in progress, not to mention fairly relevant right now.

The latest word is that sometime in the new year, weeks after the U.S. threw down its own aggressive America First plan on the desks of global leaders, the Liberal government will present Canada’s vision of the main threats to national sovereignty and security, and how best to tackle them.
