Yesterday’s High Court judgement, which set strict limits on how far children can consent to puberty-blockers, was not meant to be a verdict on gender-identity treatment, let alone on the transgender movement. As Keira Bell, who brought the case, said: “This judgment is not political, it’s about protecting vulnerable children.”

Nevertheless, the case has political implications. 

Amnesty is openly demanding the persecution of anyone who criticises the woke trans orthodoxy.

Amnesty was founded to stand up for people who are punished for following the dictates of their conscience. ‘Prisoners of conscience’ – that was its chief focus; rallying people across the world to the cause of defending those who are jailed or persecuted for their beliefs. And now? Well, in an about-turn of eye-swivelling proportions, Amnesty now openly calls for the demonisation and even ousting from public life of people who have the ‘wrong’ beliefs; of those who have the temerity to act on their conscience in a way that the ideologues at Amnesty and in the rest of the NGO elite find distasteful. From defending freedom of conscience to trashing it – that’s quite the rebrand.

It is March 2020. For several months now I have been trying to write something — anything — about the so-called “trans debate” in my Guardian column. But if I ever slip a line in about female experience belonging to people with female bodies, and the significance of this, it is always subbed out. It is disappeared. Somehow, this very idea is being blocked, not explicitly, but it certainly isn’t being published. My editors say things like: “It didn’t really add to the argument”, or it is a “distraction” from the argument.
