‘God will forgive me or not’: Inside the world of a people smuggler

Before he got on the boat to make the clandestine crossing, Shafiullah called his family in Afghanistan to tell them he was OK and on his way to Turkey.

After the call, Shafiullah, who was 16, boarded the boat. He was one of about 100 passengers that night, last June, and one of thousands of men who have have fled Afghanistan every month this year in search of a more secure life in Europe.

Shafiullah was already inside Turkey, but the people smugglers he had paid to ferry him to Istanbul were heading across Lake Van to avoid police roadblocks. The lake’s waters are dangerous, and the smugglers were setting out at night.

Hungary: “Europe’s Borders Must be Protected”

The Court of Justice of the European Union, the EU’s top court, has ruled that Hungary violated EU law when it prevented illegal immigrants from seeking asylum. The ruling paves the way for the European Commission, the EU’s powerful administrative arm, to impose financial penalties over Hungary’s restrictive immigration policies. The Hungarian government has vowed that it will not bow to pressure to jump aboard the EU’s multicultural bandwagon.

In its December 17 ruling, the court, informally known as European Court of Justice (ECJ) accused the Hungarian government of corralling migrants into so-called transit zones and of limiting their ability to apply for asylum. The court also found that Hungary did not allow asylum seekers to leave detention while their cases were being considered and offered no special protection to children and the vulnerable.

Germany: Ban on Syria deportations will be allowed to expire

Germany will not renew the ban on deportations to war-ravaged Syria, the German Interior Ministry announced on Friday.

The decision was made at a virtual meeting of the country’s 16 state interior ministers, who rejected calls from the center-left Social Democrats (SPD) to extend the measure.

Announcing the change, Deputy Interior Minister Hans-Georg Engelk said Germany should not be a shelter for criminals and threats.

A channel migrant has been arrested on suspicion of raping a woman weeks after arriving in Britain aboard a small boat.

The alleged sex attack took place at a hotel in London where the man was living at taxpayers’ expense.

The suspect, who is said to be from Sudan, was arrested by police on November 8 and later released on bail.

Yet some wonder at the growing distrust of authority.

The European Commission has proposed a new Pact on Migration and Asylum for the European Union in the hope that it will solve the deep-seated political crisis that the issue of migration continues to pose in the EU.

The European Union remains fundamentally divided over the question of migration into the continent and has been so for years. During the 2015 migration crisis, when EU leaders agreed to relocate 160,000 migrants and refugees from camps in Italy and Greece, assigning each EU member state a fixed quota, Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic refused to receive migrants. The refusal prompted the European Commission, in 2017, to start proceedings against the three countries at the Court of Justice of the European Union. In April 2020, the Court ruled that Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic had broken EU law by refusing to participate in the EU’s relocation agreement.

The incoming administration of President-elect Joe Biden is planning to reverse many of President Trump’s immigration initiatives, and Biden himself promised to prioritize the type of legislation conservatives have frequently described as amnesty.

“Some of it’s going to depend on the kind of cooperation I can or cannot get from the United States Congress,” Biden said in his first post-election television interview. “But I am going to make a commitment in the first 100 days. I will send an immigration bill to the United States Senate with a pathway to citizenship for over 11 million undocumented people in America.”

Asylum-seeker pupil who joined school as 15-year-old but ‘looks 40’ stays in class but ‘not taught with other students’

A SCHOOL pupil who joined a Coventry school claiming to be a 15-year-old boy as parents feared he ‘looked like a 40-year-old’ is now being taught apart from other pupils.

Parents at the school in Coventry raised concerns after the asylum-seeker student – who appeared to be a balding, adult male – joined the school in October.

Majority of French Consider Violent Migrant Camp Removal by Police Justified, Poll Reveals

Over 70 percent of the French believe that the controversial police operation on dismantling a migrant camp in central Paris earlier this week was justified, throwing their support behind law enforcement officers rather than the organizers of the migrants gathering, according to IFOP poll for the CNEWS news released on Friday.

The police operation was conducted on Monday evening and prompted an outcry in France, as videos and photos of police using violent methods against migrants were distributed on the Internet.

CBSA dismantles an alleged immigration fraud scheme

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) today announced the results of Project Husky, a five-year investigation into a large-scale alleged immigration fraud scheme.

The investigation began in 2015 based on Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada officials’ identification of suspicious documents submitted as part of permanent residency applications.

French minister says images of police breaking up refugee camp ‘shocking’

France’s interior minister has ordered an inquiry into the actions of police in dismantling a protest refugee camp in central Paris during which they were filmed chasing people down streets and attacking journalists and others with truncheons and teargas.

Gérald Darmanin , who earlier described the photos and videos as “shocking”, said he had received a report on the police operation and would ask the IGPN – the police’s internal disciplinary body – to look into “several unacceptable” incidents.

Darmanin said he expected the inquiry to report back within 48 hours and promised to make the conclusions public.

Canada has turned back only 4,400 so called asylum seekers in 5 years – usual suspects still whining

Canada has turned away at least 4,400 asylum seekers at the U.S. border since 2016 — including some who were hoping to find refuge here at the height of the global pandemic — according to newly released government figures.

Nearly half of those trying to enter Canada over that five-year period made the attempt in the year after U.S. President Donald Trump took office, according to figures released in response to a parliamentary request from NDP MP Jenny Kwan.

Under the Safe Third Country Agreement (STCA), which has been in effect since 2004, Canada and the U.S. consider each other to be “safe countries” for refugees and require them to make their claims in the country they arrive in first.
