Very proud to be Canadian? That’s less likely now for supporters of one party, survey suggests

OTTAWA–With U.S President Donald Trump making economic and expansionist threats against his northern neighbours, a new survey suggests that pride in being Canadian has increased among supporters of all federal parties – except Conservatives.

The number of Canadians who feel proud of their country has rebounded overall, according to research shared exclusively with the Star from the Environics Institute, with 62 per cent now indicating that they are very proud to be Canadian, compared to 53 per cent who said the same last September.

The Star has a hard time distinguishing between patriotism and the ersatz flag waving baloney we witnessed during the election, much of it by the same folks happy to see Sir john A in a box.

Disinviting Liberal MPs from Sikh temples ‘under consideration,’ as fallout continues from Modi G7 invite

OTTAWA — A prominent community activist says disinviting Liberal MPs from visiting Sikh temples is one of the steps being considered to send a message to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government over its decision to invite India’s prime minister to the upcoming G7 leaders’ summit.

Canadians favour other countries over Donald Trump’s America, survey suggests … they also elected Justin Trudeau so be mindful of their judgement

As G7 leaders gather in Kananaskis, Alta., a new poll suggests Canadians are souring on the U.S. and embracing relations with other world powers.

The Pollara Strategic Insights survey found net impressions of the U.S. have plunged since President Donald Trump returned to office in January.

At the same time, Canadians are feeling positive about the other G7 member nations: Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, France and Germany.

Protests at G7 summit expected to be largely peaceful, targeting Trump policies

Protests during the upcoming G7 leaders’ summit in Kananaskis, Alta., may be starkly different than demonstrations happening this week against immigration crackdowns in the United States.

A University of Toronto research group that has been monitoring the meetings of world leaders since 1998 says its analysis shows Canadian protests are more peaceful and smaller.

But similar to the recent demonstrations in Los Angeles, they’re likely to be against the policies of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Well it will give Trump a measure of the loons he’ll inherit should he ever annex us.

Ex-CEO Claims China’s Top Bank Told Him to ‘Ignore’ Canadian Law

The former CEO of the Canadian subsidiary of China’s largest bank says he was instructed to “ignore” Canadian law and “circumvent” Canadian regulators, alleging he was fired for not following these directions.

Lubin Wang, 51, former head of ICBK, the Canadian subsidiary of the state-owned Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), China’s largest bank, filed a lawsuit in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice for wrongful dismissal earlier this year, alleging he was pressured to scale back or abandon efforts to comply with Canadian regulations.

Canadian prime minister effectively says all Canadians must unite around Muslim values

Mark Carney, the newly installed Prime Minister of Canada, recently gave a speech at an Eid al-Adha celebration in Ottawa.

The event was hosted by the Muslim Association of Canada (MAC).

In his speech, Carney told his fellow Canadians that “all of us must come together – around the values of Eid.”

He added, “The values of community, of generosity, and yes, of sacrifice. These are Muslim values, these are Canadian values.”

When will Canada have a real leader and not some shitty assed carpetbagger like Carney?

China’s Infiltration of North America Runs ‘Deep,’ Says Canadian Investigative Journalist

From manufacturing fentanyl precursors, to operating unofficial Chinese police stations on Western soil, to recruiting academics abroad to gain access to foreign technologies needed to advance Beijing’s goals, China’s infiltration of North America runs “deep,” says a Canadian investigative journalist.

The problem of China’s operations in Canada drew renewed attention last month when FBI Director Kash Patel said Beijing is among the hostile regimes working with cartels to smuggle fentanyl into the United States through Canada.

Terry Glavin: We’re not Los Angeles yet, but it might be coming

Despite Carney’s vow to scale back immigration, the numbers keep going up — not counting those living here illegally

After several days of riots and rabble-rousing in response to the Trump administration’s ham-fisted determination to round up illegal immigrants, downtown Los Angeles was placed under curfew on Tuesday. The disorder has spread to more than a dozen American cities. There have been scores of arrests.

It has all made for great television and amusing political theatre, with Democrats shouting righteously about the rule of law and due process while ignoring their own support for “sanctuary” laws that undermine their own government’s capacity to enforce federal immigration legislation. Not to be outdone, Donald Trump’s Republicans have invoked the 18th-century Alien Enemies Act to back their plans for mass deportations. The 1798 law was about pirates.

G7: Why there is hope of a Carney-Trump tariff breakthrough at Alberta summit

Global trade will be a major focus at next week’s G7 summit as world leaders gather in Alberta, including U.S. President Donald Trump, who will be making his first appearance at a major international event since returning to the White House in January.

Experts and ambassadors are expressing some optimism that this type of event could be a difference-maker in convincing Trump to reduce the amount of tariffs charged on imports to the U.S.

Any possible concessions on the trade front would be welcomed by countries such as Canada, that are facing economic hardship because of tariffs.

Canadian prime minister accused of ‘callously’ undermining Israel in recent remarks

Carney and Islamophobia Tsar – gets assurance daughter won’t be tossed off roof.

Canada has been “jolted awake” by new threats to its security and sovereignty, “including from an emboldened Russia and an assertive China,” Mark Carney, the Canadian prime minister, said in a June 9 speech on defense spending.

“Russia’s barbaric invasion of Ukraine shattered previous assumptions of European post-Cold War security, leading to sharp reappraisals of the costs of collective responsibility and underscoring how precious and precarious are international law, sovereignty, territorial integrity and human rights,” he said.

Dumping Ground: Canada sets dubious record for number of refugee claims

Canada has moved up one spot to become the fourth largest recipient country of asylum seekers, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency.

Last year, Canada received a record 174,000 new refugee claims, of the 3.1 million new claims reported worldwide, said the agency’s 2024 global trends report released on Thursday. Canada was behind the U.S. (729,100), Egypt (433,900), Germany (229,800). In fifth was Spain at 167,400.

This country was also the second-largest resettlement country globally, welcoming 49,300 refugees in 2024, and led the world in granting permanent residence to 27,400 refugees.

Tom Flanagan: Apologizing for slavery would be a distortion of history

One of the first petitions to Canada’s new Parliament has landed, and the topic is slavery. Endorsed by Gord Johns, an MP from British Columbia who managed to survive the recent NDP annihilation, it demands an apology to Black-Canadians from the Government of Canada: “Black Canadians have endured centuries of systemic racism, beginning with transatlantic slavery, followed by legalized segregation and ongoing institutional discrimination in policing, education, employment, housing, health care and the justice system.… The Government of Canada has yet to formally apologize.”

Canada, U.S. exchanging potential terms on economic and security deal

Canada and the United States are exchanging potential terms of agreement in closely held talks on an economic and security deal, The Globe and Mail has learned, but these do not represent the draft text of an actual pact.

These exchanges are an effort to spell out what both sides might be able to agree upon as Ottawa and Washington try to find enough common ground to end their damaging trade war, sources said.

The Globe is not naming the sources because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Visible minorities in the GTA increasingly supporting Conservatives: U of T study

Federal and provincial Conservatives are winning over more visible minority voters in the GTA, a new study has found.

According to researchers at the University of Toronto’s School of Cities, visible minorities in the GTA, who make up more than half of the population, are increasingly backing Conservative candidates in federal and provincial elections. The study, out Wednesday, considers anyone, besides Indigenous people, who are non-Caucasian in race or non-white in colour as a visible minority, as defined by Statistics Canada.

The findings are based on federal and Ontario election results over the past two decades, including the two most recent national and provincial elections earlier this year.
