CHARLEBOIS: Elbows up, food prices up — until feds quietly backed down

Bloomberg reported on Thursday that Canada’s food industry is now facing fewer counter-tariffs when importing products from the United States, except for orange juice, coffee and alcohol. For many, this came as a surprise. According to the federal government’s own records, on April 16 — in the middle of the election campaign — Mark Carney, not yet elected, opted to eliminate most of the retaliatory tariffs imposed by his predecessor, Justin Trudeau.

‘Effectively Bankrupt’ Canada Post should end daily door-to-door delivery, allow part-time work on weekends, report recommends

As Canada Post and the union representing its workers inch closer to another potential strike, a report by the commission charged with examining the Crown corporation’s finances has called for the end of door-to-door mail delivery to homes — one of the main reasons for the previous work stoppage in November.

But the report, authored by industrial inquiry commissioner William Kaplan, also says that daily delivery to businesses should be maintained.

The service cut would help the corporation’s overall bleak financial picture, the report notes, a situation it highlights in great detail.

But we get a big piece of the Fentanyl trade in return so there’s that …

China emerging as top customer for Canadian oil shipped via Trans Mountain Pipeline

China has emerged as the top customer for Canadian oil shipped on the expanded Trans Mountain Pipeline, ship tracking data shows, as a U.S. trade war has shifted crude flows in the year since the pipeline started operating.

China’s new interest in Canadian oil comes as U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war has strained relations between longtime allies Washington and Ottawa. It also reflects the impact of U.S. sanctions on crude from countries like Russia and Venezuela.

‘It’s Outrageous That You Banned American Products From Your Shelves’

OTTAWA — Pete Hoekstra thumbs through an imaginary document, and pauses for effect: “This is a serious proposal — pile one.” Then he raises a second document. “I can’t believe this,” he guffaws. “This is a joke.” Straight to the discard pile.

That, says President Donald Trump’s ambassador to Canada, is how it will go — one way or another — when newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney submits a proposal on a revamped economic and security agreement with the United States.

DEA assessment fingers Canada as major fentanyl source as guns flow freely across Northern border

Blame Canada.

In its latest National Drug Threat Assessment, the US Drug Enforcement Agency is blaming Canada for a blizzard of illicit fentanyl from so-called ‘super labs’ located on this side of the border.

In its latest assesment, Canada was mentioned seven times as a source of drugs and precursor chemicals despite the DEA not mentioning Canada once in its 2024 report.

Leaked Canadian military report shows many new recruits are quickly leaving

The Canadian military insists it’s getting a handle on its recruiting crisis, but a new leaked internal report obtained by CBC News suggests many of those who come through the door quickly leave in frustration over the inability to get trained and into the job they want.

In addition, the effort to retain experienced soldiers, sailors and aircrew was dealt an important blow recently when a Department of National Defence office — set up to find ways to keep people — was defunded.

The struggle to recruit new members to both the regular and the reserve force has been a major preoccupation as the Forces face a shortage of up to 14,000 qualified personnel.

US recruiting has rebounded under Trump. Can’t imagine why!

Vancouver streets are full of so much human waste they need ‘poop fairies’ to clean it up

Vancouver, renowned for its natural beauty and laid back lifestyle, has a human waste problem so bad that businesses have hired “poop fairies” to speed the cleanup on city sidewalks.

Dodging human and dog waste has become a real problem for pedestrians navigating the city’s sidewalks, and it’s not just a problem plaguing the Downtown Eastside. The city’s own feces removal response program can’t seem to keep up so business improvement districts have hired the “poop fairies.”

The oil-rich Canadian cowboys who want their own kind of Brexit

The premier of Alberta province has offered separatists the tantalising prospect of a referendum. Will Trump get his 51st state after all?

Many of the Albertans who have concluded the province must secede from Canada contemplate the potential breakup of their country with regret, if not outright grief.

Not so Ron Robertson.

The retired police detective and leader of the Independence Party looks forward to the day Alberta, an energy powerhouse often compared to Texas, is unshackled from the rest of the nation.

It’s official. Some Canadians’ votes are more equal than others

For a while, the razor-thin election-night outcome in Terrebonne, a riding just north of Montreal, struck many Canadians as an example of the system working as it should: Liberal Tatiana Auguste was initially declared the winner by just 35 votes; standard validation procedures flipped the riding to the Bloc Québécois by 44 votes; and then a judicial recount, triggered automatically because the outcome was so close — less than 0.1 per cent of the turnout — found Auguste had won by a single vote.

Amy Hamm: B.C. blows unknown tax dollars trying to lure anti-Trump nurses

B.C.’s New Democratic premier and minister of health think that they can solve the province’s nursing shortage by enticing U.S. nurses to cross the border. The idea is laughable.

This week, Premier David Eby and his minister, Josie Osborne, announced that they had streamlined licensing applications for U.S. nurses, and approved a whopping — wait for it — 113 nurses to practice in B.C. This was following an online campaign with unknown costs, as per a statement Osborne provided to media.

Trump officials suggest ex-FBI director’s social media post was call for violence against Trump

Comey – Evil man

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Thursday that federal law enforcement is investigating a social media post made by former FBI Director James Comey that she and other Republicans suggest is a call for violence against U.S. President Donald Trump.

In an Instagram post, Comey wrote “cool shell formation on my beach walk” under a picture of seashells that appeared to form the shapes for “86 47.”

Sorry CBC but a great many more than “Trump Officials” agree it was a call to violence by a demented Comey.
