End of an era for Canada-US ties, says Carney, as allies worldwide decry Trump’s car tariffs

Canada’s prime minister has said the era of deep ties with the US “is over”, as governments from Tokyo to Berlin to Paris sharply criticised Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs on car imports, with some threatening retaliatory action.

Mark Carney warned Canadians that Trump had permanently altered relations and that, regardless of any future trade deals, there would be “no turning back”.

He told reporters: “The old relationship we had with the United States based on deepening integration of our economies and tight security and military cooperation is over.”

Sounds like Carney is pulling us out of Norad and even NATO! We can forget about Aukus too. China loves this guy!

If I were Smith and Moe I’d open up a backchannel.

Germany leads defiance to Trump car tariffs, saying it ‘will not give in’

Germany has said it “will not give in” and that Europe must “respond firmly” as US President Donald Trump targets imported cars and car parts with a 25% tax in his latest tariffs.

Other major world economies have vowed to retaliate, with France’s president branding the move “a waste of time” and “incoherent”, Canada calling it a “direct attack”, and China accusing Washington of violating international trade rules.

Carmaker stocks from Japan to Germany dipped. In the US, General Motors dropped 7%, while Ford fell more than 2%.

FBI Director Kash Patel has chilling warning about the Canadian border

FBI Director Kash Patel warned the U.S. needs to be ‘more vigilant’ about what is coming in across the Canadian border as adversaries have ‘adapted.’

The top law enforcement officer made the claim while testifying before lawmakers in the House Intelligence Committee about global threats on Wednesday.

‘Known and suspected terrorists are flowing in through our northern border more than they are our southern border,’ Patel warned.

He attributed it to the ‘successes we’ve had at closing our southern border.’

So Much Winning! Yale professor who studies fascism fleeing US to blight Canada for a change

A Yale professor who studies fascism is leaving the US to work at a Canadian university because of the current US political climate, which he worries is putting the US at risk of becoming a “fascist dictatorship”.

Jason Stanley, who wrote the 2018 book How Fascism Works: The Politics of Us and Them, has accepted a position at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy.

Stanley told the Daily Nous, a philosophy profession website, that he made the decision “to raise my kids in a country that is not tilting towards a fascist dictatorship”.

Lucky Us.

Giving Muslim Extremists a Pass Is Reflected in Canada’s New Guide to ‘Islamophobia’

Beware attempts to blur the line between valid criticism of political Islamism and anti-Muslim discrimination.

A growing danger among Western liberals is the failure to distinguish between the radical Islamist minority and the majority of Muslims. Feature the Canadian government’s new “Guide to Understanding and Combatting Islamophobia.”

The guide’s imprecise definition of “Islamophobia” blurs the line between genuine anti-Muslim discrimination and valid criticism of political Islamism. By failing to make this distinction, the guide shields extremist agendas from scrutiny and empowers those who seek to silence moderate Muslim voices.

Trumpian Geoeconomics

Economic strength can translate into geopolitical advantage.

President Donald Trump is approaching world politics with geoeconomic means for a geopolitical purpose. His reinvigoration of the Monroe Doctrine in the Western Hemisphere, military pivot to the Indo-Pacific, and rapprochement with Russia in Europe is the geographic part. His tariffs, encouragement of foreign investment in the United States, promotion of domestic energy production unhampered by climate regulations, and domestic cuts in government programs is the economic part. Back in 1990, the strategic thinker Edward Luttwak wrote that the world was moving from geopolitics to geoeconomics. But, as Luttwak certainly knew, economics has always been an important component of geopolitics. Trump the businessman understands that.

China understands it, too. Its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is geoeconomics on steroids, extending China’s economic influence throughout Europe, Africa, and the Western Hemisphere. The BRI uses economic power to advance China’s geopolitical interests. Trump is merely doing the same thing with his America First policies.

Ontario expects U.S. to lessen impact of auto tariffs on Canada, following Lutnick phone call: source

Ontario expects the U.S. administration to significantly ease the impact of auto tariffs on Canada, following a phone call from Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to Premier Doug Ford on Wednesday, according to a source.

Mr. Lutnick called Mr. Ford on Wednesday evening, according to a senior Ontario government source, after U.S. President Donald Trump announced auto tariffs during a news conference. The Globe and Mail is not identifying the source as they are not authorized to speak publicly about internal discussions.

Sounds a bit like Good Cop Bad Cop.

I suspect that many of the same companies that manufacture here now will be forced to relocate to the States or shut down.

The Canadian market it is said is not large enough to sustain a domestic auto industry.

The EV Fantasy has crashed and burned so what’s next? Unending bailouts?

This will help.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith responded on Wednesday to the barrage of criticism she’s faced from across Canada for her recent diplomatic efforts and media appearances in the U.S.

During Wednesday’s afternoon session in the Alberta Legislature, Smith said she’s been unjustly criticized for her attempts to persuade officials that a trade war between the U.S. and Canada would be a bad idea. She defended her strategy, characterizing her actions as entering the “lion’s den” to change the hearts and minds of Americans that Canada needs on its side

GOLDSTEIN: Flip-flopping Carney wrong choice to lead fight against Trump

The idea that Liberal Leader Mark Carney and the current Liberal government are best equipped to fight a trade war with U.S. President Donald Trump is absurd.

In fact, the Liberals over their decade in power weakened our ability to fight that war by undermining our economy.

Politicians Are Trading Our Children’s Future for Votes

Australia’s cultural landscape is undergoing a profound transformation, shaped by an “unprecedented wave of migration.” As of June 30, 2023, 30.7% of the nation’s 26.6 million residents—some 8.2 million people—were born overseas, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). This marks the highest proportion of overseas-born Australians since 1893, surpassing the 29.5% recorded in 2022.

Hinduism, for example, is recognized as the country’s fastest-growing religion, not due to conversion, but through the mass immigration of Indians into Australia.

Australia is frequently praised—often by its own politicians—as a multicultural success story, yet the long-term consequences of such profound demographic changes remain underexplored, especially as these shifts are poised to intensify.

Sub Canada for OZ. We are no different.

Things will get worse under a Carney government with Mark “I00 Million Unvetted 3rd Migrants” in a position of influence.
