Trump’s talk about Canada parrots Putin’s claims on Ukraine says CBC

It took a while for Canadian politicians to figure out that Donald Trump wasn’t joking with his talk about annexing Canada.

After Trump raised the idea at a dinner in Mar-A-Lago attended by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Nov. 29, Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic Leblanc said the “joke” was actually a positive.

“The president was teasing us. It was, of course, in no way a serious comment,” LeBlanc said.

Liberals getting money’s worth as media & pollsters release latest ginned up TDS poll

New poll says 27% of Canadians view the United States as an ‘enemy’ country

OTTAWA — A new poll suggests that more than a quarter of Canadians — 27 per cent — now see the United States as an “enemy” country, while another 30 per cent still say they consider the U.S. an ally.

Another 27 per cent of respondents to the Leger survey said they consider the United States to be a “neutral” country.

The poll comes as U.S. President Donald Trump threatens to impose economically devastating tariffs on Canada and has repeatedly pushed the idea that Canada should become a U.S. state.

Have some more gin.

John Robson: Crass anti-Americanism will get us nowhere

Washington, we have a problem. The United States appears to be retreating into isolationism in ways not seen in a century and a half, with potentially appalling consequences. And we couldn’t be handling it worse if we were Kremlin plants.

If you value the Pax Americana, and you should, we must find some way of persuading our neighbours and long-time protectors not to lay their burden down. Childish abuse won’t get it done. Calling Donald Trump a pro-Russian tyrant will certainly not persuade him or his MAGA supporters to reengage with the world on our terms.

Universal basic income program could cut poverty up to 40%: Budget watchdog

The government’s fiscal watchdog says a guaranteed basic income program at the federal level could cut poverty rates in Canada by up to 40 per cent.

In a new report, the Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) says that a Canadian family in the lowest earning group could expect to receive an average of $6,100 in annual disposable income through such a program.

Higher earners could see their income drop because of changes in the tax system to implement the basic income support.

COLD FRIGHT: Trump-Putin Arctic energy talks freeze out Canada and Denmark

Talks between US and Russian negotiators in Riyadh to end the war in Ukraine on Tuesday raised alarm for an altogether and potentially even more disturbing reason as far as Canada and Denmark are concerned.

That’s because POLITICO is reporting that Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin are open to energy deals north of the 60th parallel despite ongoing boundary disputes with Canada and Denmark, both of the US strongman wants to annex.

Amy Hamm: Courts must not allow Trudeau to get away with his self-serving prorogation

Final written arguments in the constitutional challenge of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s prorogation of Parliament are to be submitted to the Federal Court on Wednesday. Canadians must win this case. Our democracy depends on it.

“All I can say is I’m going to try my best to issue this decision before a point in time beyond which it would become moot,” said Federal Court Chief Justice Paul Crampton at the end of the two-day hearing last week, in reference to the March 24 end date of the current prorogation period.

GameStop looks to sell its Canadian and French operations — CEO cites ‘Wokeness and DEI’

Brick and mortar videogame retailer and popular meme stock GameStop (GME) announced Tuesday that it plans to sell its operations in France and Canada after an “evaluation of its international assets.”

The latest move follows years of declining revenues for the company. The retailer has reportedly shuttered more than 700 of its stores around the world since 2020.

The company announced the move in a brief news release on its website. While the statement did not provide any further explanation of the decision, its CEO appears to have taken issue with the “wokeness” of the two countries.

John Ivison: The Arctic is Trump’s obsession. Not every Canadian leader seems to understand that

The constitutional problems preventing Canada from becoming the 51st state are so intractable that the idea is less practical than building a Mediterranean Riviera in Gaza.

For Canada to dissolve itself would require a constitutional amendment that would need the agreement of the House of Commons, the Senate and every province, not to mention First Nations.

On the U.S. side, President Donald Trump could present Congress with a treaty similar to the one that ended the Mexican-American War in 1847 that added nine states, including California.

You can love your country and still think it’s broken

Canada is broken.

That was true before U.S. President Donald Trump started threatening Canada with tariffs and annexation, and it’s true now.

We can’t build things in this country. We can’t defend ourselves. We’ve lost control of our immigration system. Our violent crime rates are getting worse. Our courts are overburdened. Our productivity is poor. Child poverty rates are creeping up. Food bank usage has reached record highs. Housing costs are exorbitant. Canadians can’t get timely health care, or health care at all. And yet our spending is out of control. We can argue about the semantics, but that sounds pretty broken to me.

Trump would boost ‘proud’ US ice hockey team at Canada game, says GM

The general manager of the US men’s ice hockey team said he would welcome a visit from Donald Trump to the 4 Nations Face-Off final between the United States and Canada on Thursday night.

Bill Guerin, who played 18 years in the NHL, said on Fox News that Trump’s presence would give a boost to the rivalry between the North American hockey powers. He credited Trump’s tariff threats and talk of making Canada the 51st US state for raising the intensity in their fight-filled matchup in the preliminary round.

Trump plans 25% auto tariffs to reshape US trade policy

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday auto tariffs will be around 25% and he will have more to share on the topic on April 2.

On Friday, Trump said levies on automobiles would come as soon as April 2, the day after members of his cabinet are due to deliver reports to him outlining options for a range of import duties as he seeks to reshape global trade.

Trump has long pointed to what he calls unfair treatment of U.S. automotive exports in foreign markets.
