‘It’s a bloodbath out there:’ Tech workers forced to take ‘survival jobs’ as AI cuts swath through workforce

The technology sector was supposed to supply Vancouver’s jobs of the future. But fresh graduates and laid-off workers say job searches now take months, even years, forcing some to walk dogs or stock shelves to pay the bills

Throngs of 20-somethings dressed in blazer-jean combos and armed with paper résumes were asking senior tech leaders about how to break into the industry during a brunch networking meeting in October at the KPMG LLC office in downtown Vancouver.

It was yet another technology-focused event — from networking brunches to mentorship walks to artificial intelligence (AI) workshops — in the city that has attracted sold-out crowds of fresh graduates and young tech workers pursuing their first jobs in the age of AI.

CORPORATE CANADA’S RESPONSE: Recruit more foreign workers, especially the one’s Trump is denying visas to!

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney says he sees an opening for Canada to attract global tech talent now that the United States is introducing a $100,000 fee for temporary visas for workers with specialized skills.

… According to Pew Research, about 60 per cent of H-1B visas issued since 2012 were held by people in computer-related fields.

That article quoting Carney is from a month ago. No matter what the question the answer is always “More foreign workers”.

An unanswered question is how many foreign students are among the unemployed “tech workers” discussed in the FP piece.

Poll shows more young women want to leave U.S. — their top destination is Canada

WASHINGTON — A record number of younger American women now say they want to leave the United States — and their most common destination of choice is Canada.

Those findings come from a new Gallup poll that says 40 per cent of American women aged 15 to 44 report they would permanently leave the United States given the opportunity.

That’s substantially more than the 19 per cent of younger men who told the pollster they want to leave the United States for good. Gallup said the 21-point gap between the genders is the largest it has ever recorded.

Quebec men accused in alleged extremist plot will go to trial following federal indictment

Three men accused of facilitating terrorism in Quebec will be sent to trial after the federal Crown prosecutor’s office filed a direct indictment on Nov. 7, along with new charges.

The move effectively bypasses a preliminary inquiry requested by the men’s lawyers in September.

Filed with authorization of the attorney general of Canada or deputy attorney general, the indictment means the case will now be sent to Superior Court, where a trial could take place in 2026.

In July, the RCMP charged four men, including two active members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), with being part of an alleged anti-government plot to forcibly take over land in the Quebec City region

Coast guard patrol ships to be pulled from service ‘sooner than expected,’ amid pressures from new security mandate

OTTAWA — A long-troubled fleet of coast guard patrol ships that the Canadian government paid hundreds of millions to build will be pulled from service “sooner than expected,” an internal document shows.

It comes as the civilian agency braces for more demands under its new surveillance mandate from Prime Minister Mark Carney, who announced back in June that it would be folded into the National Defence Department.

Ontario ranked 48th out of the 60 states and provinces.

Canada pushes to join Eurovision: ‘This is about protecting our identity’

The prestige of Eurovision – I don’t want anything to do with this identity

When Canada released its federal budget this month, much of it was standard fare, from the plans to downsize the public service to the boost in defence spending.

But one line tucked in the nearly 500-page document has captured imaginations on both sides of the Atlantic: a mention that the government is working with Canada’s national broadcaster to explore participation in the Eurovision song contest.

When asked about the line, the country’s finance minister, François-Philippe Champagne, said the proposal to join the glitzy TV extravaganza had come from “the people who participate”.

Ten Per Cent of CSIS Terror Investigations Involve Teens, Canadian Spy Boss Warns

OTTAWA — In his first speech as Canada’s new intelligence chief, CSIS Director Dan Rogers said the agency observed “foreign interference activity of concern” during the 2025 federal election — though not at a level that altered Canada’s ability to hold a “free and fair” vote — warning that the country now faces escalating national-security threats shaped by violent extremism, criminal–state hybrid networks, and transnational repression from China, India, and Iran, which, in extreme cases, involves “threats to safety and life.”

Addressing espionage and attempts to recruit Canadians, the new CSIS director singled out China prominently.

With Carney’s budget prioritizing the business elite, could this be Canada’s Mamdani moment?

Although you may not have noticed, last week’s federal budget did away with the luxury tax on yachts and private jets.

It had been more of an annoyance than a serious tax on the superrich.

Still, at a time of staggering wealth accumulation at the top and a persistent affordability crisis below, it seemed like an odd decision, and one that suggests how badly Canadians were conned by Mark Carney.

A lot of Elbow People would go for this.

Top soldier has second thoughts about recruiting public servants for reserves

Canada’s top soldier appears to be having second thoughts about recruiting public servants to augment reserve forces, adding they are already doing enough for defence.

Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jennie Carignan and defence deputy minister Stefanie Beck signed a document on May 30, 2025, launching a plan to boost both the reserves and what is known as the Supplementary Reserve.

Carney bets on more critical minerals mining, electricity and liquified natural gas in latest batch of major projects

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Thursday that his government is sending more critical minerals mining, clean electricity, and a liquefied natural gas project to a new federal office designed to streamline the regulatory approvals process.

Speaking in Terrance, B.C., he announced that six more projects would be forwarded to the Major Projects Office, saying they met the government’s criteria of what constituted “nation-building” efforts to spur development and attract billions more in private investment, which the prime minister said would lead to new jobs.

Another Alberta separatist leader is courting U.S. conservatives in Washington and Mar-a-Lago

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Another Alberta separatist has travelled south of the border to woo American conservatives.

In recent months, members of the Alberta Prosperity Project (APP), a separatist organization, have boasted of meetings in Washington, D.C., with senior-level officials from the U.S. administration. Now, the only political party affiliated with Alberta’s independence movement, the Republican Party of Alberta (RPA), is making its own waves south of the border.

Relative of Muammar Gaddafi given a new chance to stay in Canada due to uncle’s close bond with dead Libyan dictator

A relative of former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi has been given another chance to remain in Canada by arguing he was much closer to the brutal authoritarian regime than immigration officials thought he was.

Seraj Essaadi El Ferjani Ahmed, a citizen of Libya, has been in Canada since 2017 and appears to be the nephew of a notorious member of Gaddafi’s inner circle, a man so loyal he was fleeing with Gaddafi when the leader was caught by rebels in 2011 and killed.

Immigration department staff have been cautioned against describing Canada’s health-care system as “free” in social media posts encouraging people to immigrate to Canada, according to internal emails.

October social media posts from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) read, “Thinking about moving to Canada? Did you know Canada has public health care? Learn how it works, who can get it and what services are covered.”
