European Union top brass says Carney is off to Armenia this weekend for summit

OTTAWA – The European Union says Prime Minister Mark Carney will be in Armenia this weekend as part of a summit focused on strategic issues.

Carney’s office has not publicly confirmed the visit, but European Council President Antonio Costa says on social media that the prime minister will be attending.

The European Political Community summit will take place in the Armenian capital, Yerevan, with a focus on strategic co-operation for the continent’s politics, security and infrastructure.

Conservatives call on auditor general to investigate $250M PrescribeIT program

Conservatives call on auditor general to investigate $250M PrescribeIT program

Conservative MPs are calling on the auditor general to probe the federal government’s handling of a $250-million program which reportedly is set to be scrapped next month.

PrescribeIT was launched in 2017 to modernize the way doctors send prescriptions to pharmacies, and to phase out older technology such as fax machines.

But Canada Health Infoway, the not-for-profit organization which runs PrescribeIT and is funded by the federal government, says the program will end May 29 as it transitions to an “an open-standards approach” for electronic prescriptions.

Canada’s Carney launches a sovereign wealth fund. What is it?

Canada’s Carney launches a sovereign wealth fund. What is it?

Canada is launching a government-owned investment fund to pay for major development projects in the country, Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced.

The Canada Strong Fund, a first for the country, will invest in energy, infrastructure, mining, agriculture and technology, with an initial contribution of C$25bn ($18.4bn; £13.5bn).

The fund will also allow Canadians who have “a bit of extra money” to invest into it directly, but experts have warned it risks “limited returns”.

Liberals promising improved bottom line in today’s spring economic update

Liberals promising improved bottom line in today’s spring economic update

The federal Liberals will table their spring economic update today, with Prime Minister Mark Carney hinting at a rosier bottom line and smaller-than-forecasted deficits.

“There will be good news [Tuesday] with the spring update on the fiscal situation, the government’s performance against our deficit targets, the government’s performance on getting spending under control,” Carney said Monday, while unveiling his plan to create Canada’s first national sovereign wealth fund.

Canadians will get more details of that performance when Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne tables the fiscal update after 4 p.m. ET.

The background pic in the Carney clip is “Toronto – 18 William Street, August 28, 1914.”

Not all that long ago. This is what Carney and his ilk hope for you.

“Most of the Ward’s residents have no indoor plumbing and no toilets. Sanitation standards and public health regulations don’t exist.”

Certainly suitable for our replacements so there’s that.

Morgan: Allowing Large Numbers of Non-Citizens to Serve in Canada’s Military Has Potential Pitfalls

Morgan: Allowing Large Numbers of Non-Citizens to Serve in Canada’s Military Has Potential Pitfalls

One of Mark Carney’s first promises upon becoming prime minister was to reinvest in and rebuild Canada’s military, and it appears the Liberal government has followed through with the recruitment commitment. The Canadian Armed Forces recently reported the largest surge in recruitment seen in 30 years, with over 7,300 new members joining in the 2025/2026 fiscal year.

The CAF has struggled to attract new members for decades, so it was surprising to see such a turnaround. In 2022, the federal government changed the rules and allowed non-citizens to join the Forces. This tactic appears to have worked, as 20 percent of the new recruits aren’t Canadian citizens but are permanent residents. This way of bulking up the CAF raises some concerns, however.

Majority of Carney’s Liberals have faith in his leadership. Here are the ones who don’t, according to a poll

When Prime Minister Mark Carney won government last year, several issues important to Canadians were awaiting his immediate attention.

And while it seems many Canadians think he and his cabinet have done a respectable job addressing some, a new Angus Reid Institute (ARI) poll shows the priorities at the top of most voters’ minds, including those of Liberal balloters, are not getting the attention they deserve in Ottawa.

Howard Lutnick’s right. Canada needs to limit EV trade with China

Howard Lutnick’s right. Canada needs to limit EV trade with China

Was Prime Minister Mark Carney “nuts” to make a deal to import electric vehicles from China? That’s what Howard Lutnick says. “Carney has a problem with us,” the U.S. Commerce Secretary told a conference audience April 17. “He gets on a plane and he goes to China. Does he think the Chinese economy’s gonna buy his stuff? China is entirely an export-driven economy!”

Lutnick’s style was crude, his attitude abrasive. The deal he trashed was arguably a rational tactic to buy Canada’s canola sector some short-term breathing space. But on the challenges of trading with China, he wasn’t wrong.

Gangs using Indian international students as ‘money mules’ in Canada’s extortion crimes, new report finds

The Bishnoi gang may not be the only criminal organization involved in extortion crimes in Canada, according to a new federal report.

The report, from the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC), also states that international students from India facing financial pressure are being used as “money mules” in extortion crimes.

I bet LPC fingers are to be found in this criminal pie. The LPC have turned immigration into a crime syndicate.

Pacific Mall in Markham is a ‘trade barrier,’ says the U.S. Here’s why — and why that may be changing

Andrew Carandang and Jonathan Pan have been coming to Markham’s Pacific Mall for as long as they can remember — but there are still surprises to be had.

“They sell tools here?” Pan said, walking through the mall’s glass-box maze of more than 350 stores and stalls.

Three years ago the lifelong friends brought their online vintage clothing business Legacy Toronto into a physical store here, in what a sign inside brags is the largest indoor Asian mall in North America: “You must see it.”

Canada’s Carney has enjoyed a long political honeymoon. Now comes the test

Canada’s Carney has enjoyed a long political honeymoon. Now comes the test

Mark Carney arrived on Canada’s political scene last year as an Ivy League and Oxford educated economist and a former central banker for two countries.

He had an impressive resume and ambitions to be prime minister but had never run for public office until replacing Justin Trudeau as Liberal leader.

There was concern his lack of political experience would be a liability, but under his leadership, the Liberals won a minority government, which in a year had solidified into a narrow majority following the defection of five opposition members of parliament to his party.

Liberals must show results in spring economic update: former PBO

OTTAWA – Prime Minister Mark Carney will be under pressure to show results from his economic agenda when his government tables an update to its fiscal outlook on Tuesday.

The spring economic statement comes one year to the day after the party secured a minority mandate in the federal election, a fourth win for the Liberals in a row, but the first under Carney.

It also comes the same week three new Liberal MPs are expected to be sworn into office, officially giving Carney’s government majority status.

Auto industry warns China EV tariff concession risks Canadian jobs and investment

Canada’s auto sector is warning that a federal decision to ease tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles could undermine domestic manufacturing and weaken North American supply chains, as executives say the policy puts Canadian jobs at risk.

The concerns were raised at a Commons science committee hearing after cabinet approved a quota allowing up to 49,000 Chinese-made battery electric vehicles into the Canadian market this year at reduced tariff levels, with the cap set to increase by 6.5% annually.
