Canada needs better security checks for international students, critics say

International students are not required to get police certificates from law enforcement in their home countries before coming to Canada — something critics say needs to change.

People applying for permanent residency, citizenship or International Experience Canada (commonly known as the working holiday visa) are required to produce such police certificates, which give Canadian officials early warning of an applicant’s possible criminal history in their country of origin.

But Canadian visa officers don’t necessarily have access to police-drafted documents when deciding whether to admit an international student.

How bout no international students for a good long while.

Quebec separatist leader holds Trudeau to ransom: ‘We saw an opportunity’

The leader of the Quebec independence party propping up the government of Justin Trudeau has insisted that the political lifeline depends on the quick passage of two pieces of legislation, and warned Canada’s embattled prime minister that he remains “very vulnerable”.

The Bloc Québécois leader, Yves-François Blanchet, told the Guardian the Liberals must act swiftly to enshrine protections for dairy farmers and boost payments to seniors to stave off a fatal vote of non-confidence. He warned that unless both pieces of legislation are passed into law by 29 October, his party would begin discussions with other parties to trigger a federal election.

Delusional Trudeau dishes on where he went wrong, what he did right and why he’s the one to beat Pierre Poilievre

Justin Trudeau dishes with Liberal MP on where he went wrong, what he did right and why he’s the one to beat Pierre Poilievre

OTTAWA—Under siege in the polls but fighting for a shot at a fourth term, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took to a backbench MP’s podcast to riff on why he thinks he deserves it.

In a nearly hour-long interview recorded Friday and published Tuesday, Trudeau gave more revealing answers to fellow political traveller Liberal MP Nate Erskine-Smith than he has to any journalist in months.

The prime minister conceded a few mistakes. But only a few. And he expressed little regret.

I think an intervention may be called for.

Opinion: Are the federal Liberals facing an extinction event?

The odds are pretty good that if you’re reading this right now, you live in a part of the world that once belonged to mammoths. The woolly mammoth ranged over vast areas of the northern hemisphere, from the Arctic Circle to Spain and from Europe across Asia and into the Americas. A cold-adapted animal, the mammoth nevertheless survived for millions of years despite the coming and going of warming periods between ice ages. When the temperature warmed and the steppe gave way to forests, mammoths would retreat to colder areas and their numbers would shrink. When the ice came back, the sovereigns of the north would reclaim their rightful place.

Premier François Legault says Trudeau should use force to dump 50% of Quebec’ asylum seekers in other Provinces

Premier François Legault says the federal government should force asylum seekers arriving in Quebec to move to other provinces, including people who have already settled in the province.

Legault said during a trip to Paris on Wednesday that he wants half of the asylum seekers currently in Quebec to be transferred elsewhere in the country.

The premier says it doesn’t make sense that Quebec receives about 45 percent of would-be refugees in Canada, despite accounting for only 22 percent of the population.

I wish. But Toronto is a stupid city.

CRESCIA: Trudeau is hanging on, even as his career is hanging on the ropes

In every politician’s career, there comes a time when one must decide how ambitious they want to be and if they are ready to go after more power and greater glory.

For Justin Trudeau, that moment occurred in 2012 with the “Thrilla on the Hilla” boxing charity event. After spending, much of his life unsure of what to do with himself he tried his hand as a bungee coach, acting, engineering and teaching. Nothing stuck. Deep down he faced a lingering insecurity of wanting to be his own man and break away from the privileges of being the son of a famous prime minister.

Bloc leader says the deadline still stands after Liberals vote against pension motion

Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet says the Oct. 29 deadline his party set for the government to meet a key policy demand still stands after the Liberals largely voted against his party’s motion on Wednesday.

“The government did not have the spine to provide us and Canadians and Quebecers with a clear answer,” Blanchet told reporters after Wednesday’s vote.

“They just want to get some more time and to keep not deciding about anything. They might hope that they go further than Oct. 29. They will not.

Not sure what this fan dance is about.

Are we being played? I bet the agriculture cartel protections get the OK and the pension demand gets shelved.

I trust the Bloc about as much as I trust the Liberals and the cartels are important to them both.

Trudeau’s Canada: Affordable rent out of reach for Canadian minimum wage earners nearly everywhere, report finds

Finding an affordable apartment to rent in most of Canada’s larger cities is nearly impossible for people earning minimum wage, a new report from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) says.

Only 22 neighbourhoods out of nearly 800 in larger Canadian cities have average rents for two-bedroom apartments that would be affordable for someone earning minimum wage, the report says. The situation has grown worse since the CCPA’s first study of the issue in 2019.

Many Canadian voters say they feel caught between extremes — and that’s not helping Justin Trudeau

Two of the most recent polls are putting Justin Trudeau’s Liberals back in 2015 — and not the better part of that year for them, when they liked to say that better was always possible.

Nik Nanos is reporting that Liberal support has dropped to levels not seen since 2015, while Abacus Data is showing the Liberals behind the New Democrats — outside Quebec, it should be noted.

Trudeau’s 3rd World Economy: Canadian Tire store in Toronto accused of exploiting temporary foreign workers

Trudeau’s Legacy: Indentured servitude and depressed wages for all.

The owner of a Canadian Tire store in Toronto is being investigated by the provincial and federal governments for allegedly mistreating and financially exploiting employees hired through Ottawa’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program.

At least 13 of those employees resigned or were fired by the store late last year, according to documents reviewed by The Globe and Mail and conversations with several of the workers.

… A spokesperson with Ontario’s Ministry of Labour, Training, Immigration and Skills Development confirmed to The Globe that the province is investigating Ezhil Natarajan, who owns and operates a Canadian Tire store in Etobicoke, which comprises Toronto’s west end.
