A staff report asks council to ratify an agreement with the federal government that would provide London with $7,345,000 from the Interim Housing Assistance Program (IHAP) to cover costs stemming from the increasing number of asylum claimants accessing local support agencies, including homeless shelters.
The funding would provide asylum claimants with supports such as housing navigation, orientation and basic needs assistance until March 31, 2027.
In addition, 11 apartments will be dedicated specifically for asylum claimants in a building at 763-773 Dundas Street led by the London Cross Cultural Learner Centre (CCLC).
Why to drop a bad idea on immigration
The federal government seems to be quietly abandoning a program that would have opened a door to permanent residency for temporary foreign workers employed in low-wage jobs in Canada.
The program, mentioned unceremoniously in a bulletin in the Canada Gazette in April of 2024, appeared to offer a quick path to permanent residency for international students and temporary foreign workers making a living as food and beverage servers, delivery drivers, cleaners and general labourers.

OTTAWA – Some premiers say they want to have more local control over the immigration system — but experts say what the system really needs is a national conversation on immigration reform that shores up public support.
“Most of the existing policies have been formulated on the fly without any evidence or serious impact evaluations of what the various classes of immigrants are, how they’re performing economically and otherwise,” said Michael Trebilcock, a retired academic and co-author of two books on immigration policy.

Ontario mortgage delinquencies on the rise and could climb higher still, experts warn
Mortgage delinquencies appear to be on the rise in both Ontario and the Greater Toronto Area and the numbers could get worse as Canada navigates choppy economic waters, experts say.
According to data prepared for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) by Equifax Canada, mortgage delinquencies rose to 0.22 per cent in Ontario for the first quarter of this year. That’s up from 0.15 per cent in the first quarter of 2024 and 0.09 per cent in the first quarter of 2023.
In Toronto, the mortgage delinquency rate hit 0.23 per cent for the first quarter of 2025. That compares to 0.14 per cent for the first quarter of 2024 and 0.08 per cent for the first quarter of 2023.

OTTAWA — Shortly after cutting immigration levels, the federal immigration department heard through government-funded polling that a slight majority of Canadians still found this year’s number too high.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada commissioned the survey as part of its annual tracking of public sentiment towards immigration and reported it publicly as part of the government’s disclosures on its public opinion research.
A slim majority? It’s been found that the Liberal Party’s much touted intake reductions don’t amount to a hill of beans yet I feel certain these fudged numbers were presented as fact to poll respondents.
