A prominent member of the federal New Democrats has lost her cabinet critic positions after travelling to Greece in spite of widespread travel restrictions meant to curb the spread of COVID-19.

The party released a statement saying Manitoba member of Parliament Niki Ashton travelled to Greece recently to visit a family member who was seriously ill.

Too crazy commie for the NDP? This tells me Niki has been disappeared by the party.

Congratulations, Rod Phillips. You just nuked the credibility of your government’s ‘stay home’ messages

Congratulations, Rod Phillips. You just nuked the credibility of your government’s ‘stay home’ messages

While the peasants locked themselves in their homes and connected with family through windows and cellphones, Ontario’s now-former finance minister, Rod Phillips, jetted off to St. Barts. On the day he left the country – shirking recommendations against international travel that have been in place for the better part of the year – almost 2,000 people were newly diagnosed with COVID-19 in the province.

Pretty scathing. Go incognito.

But the area has been abandoned in the past 10 months, with souvenir stores shuttered and rates of homelessness and crime surging as tourists stay away and the coronavirus rages.

How is Canada doing in the fight against COVID-19? Not so well if we compare ourselves to other countries.

Last summer, when daily new cases were low and the economy was bouncing back, Canadians gave their governments high marks as managers of the fight against COVID-19. But now they have become more critical as new cases keep rising, lockdowns have been reimposed, and the economy stalls.

What is left to say?

The ‘COVID19 s the most terrible infection ever, and we must do everything in our power to stop it, whatever the cost’ banner.

Or the ‘What on earth are we doing? This is no worse than a bad flu, and we are destroying the world economy, stripping away basic human rights and killing more people than we are saving’ banner.

There may be others.

Between these two, main, completely incompatible positions, lies the truth. It is in pretty poor shape. It has been crushed, and bent out of shape, smashed, and left as a broken heap in the corner. I search where I can, to find the fragments, in an attempt to bring together a picture that makes some kind of sense.

Excellent article.
