Sweden has demanded tougher EU border controls after a failed asylum seeker suspected of terrorist sympathies shot dead two Swedish football fans in Brussels.
Abdesalem Lassoued, 45, a Tunisian man, was shot and killed outside a café in the Schaerbeek district of the Belgian capital yesterday morning as local children travelled to school.

As worshippers lit candles, the choir sang ‘Jesus, the Christ, the inner light, don’t let the darkness speak to me’.
Berlin’s Jewish community has been shaken by two petrol bombs thrown at a synagogue amid a spike in antisemitic incidents in some European countries.
Police said two people threw “burning bottles filled with liquid” in what was described as attempted arson.

Ex-wife of ISIS fighter convicted in death of James Foley and other hostages says she was ‘oblivious’
A Canadian woman whose marriage to a notorious ISIS fighter is being made public for the first time says she was “oblivious to what was going on” when she lived with him in Syria.
In an interview with CBC and U.K. public broadcaster BBC in Toronto last week, Dure Ahmed, 33, said she was unaware of the atrocities being committed by her then-husband El Shafee Elsheikh, who was part of a cell within ISIS linked to the abduction, torture and beheading of Western hostages.

A man who was once linked to an Islamic State cell nicknamed the Beatles has pleaded guilty to charges of possessing a firearm for terrorist purposes and funding terrorism.
Aine Davis, 39, appeared at the Old Bailey via video link from Belmarsh Prison on Monday.
He has already served a prison sentence in Turkey for being a member of the Islamic State group and was arrested on arrival back in the UK last August.
Davis will be sentenced on 13 November.
Two people have been shot dead in the Belgian capital Brussels on Monday evening, police have said.
The gunman fled the scene and is still at large. Prosecutors say they are treating the shooting as terrorism.
Reports said the victims were Swedish. Sweden are playing Belgium in a Euro 2024 qualifier, but it is not known if the victims were there for the match.
A video posted on social media of an Arabic-speaking man claimed he carried out the attack in the name of God.
