The Huntingdon horror: this is not normal

We are being encouraged to see even preventable atrocities as part and parcel of everyday life.

‘Be vigilant.’ Among the oddly muted government responses to the mass stabbing on a train heading from Doncaster to London on Saturday night, the words of UK defence secretary John Healey stuck most in the craw. You’d think he was talking about a rise in pickpocketing, not another act of barbarism on British soil.

Questions about the BBC and the Huntingdon train attack

AT TIME of writing, two people have been arrested by police in connection with a horrendous stabbing spree of at least ten passengers on a train last night. At least one of the alleged attackers was first shot with a Taser by police officers.

The arrests, in Huntingdon where the Doncaster to King’s Cross train was brought to an emergency stop, mean that legal proceedings are now active. It is highly likely that charges will follow imminently and the media must be extremely careful not to prejudice subsequent court proceedings.

Lapu-Lapu festival suspect should have been in hospital before attack, experts say

The man accused of driving an SUV through a crowded street festival in Vancouver this spring, killing 11, should have been hospitalized by his mental-health team in the days before the attack, say four past and present members of a tribunal that oversees involuntary hospital detentions.

These members of the Mental Health Review Board of British Columbia say Kai-Ji Adam Lo’s behaviour before the April 26 attack on the Lapu-Lapu Day Festival should have raised multiple red flags for members of his health team, who are trained to recognize them.

Driver who police say plowed into crowd outside Hollywood club has violent criminal history

The driver who police say intentionally plowed into a crowd early Saturday outside a popular East Hollywood music venue was previously convicted of a hate crime in Orange County, a conviction subsequently overturned by an appeals court, according to prosecutors and court records.

Fernando Ramirez was 23 when, on June 15, 2019, he entered a Whole Foods Market in Laguna Beach and sucker-punched a 26-year-old Black employee who’d been on a lunch break, breaking the man’s nose and severely damaging his two front teeth, according to reports at the time of the incident.

When asked by an officer why he did it, Ramirez said in a conversation recorded on video that it was, in part, because the worker was Black, and that “he hated all Black people,” court records show.

Hate crime? He must be a White Hispanic!

Fuel to Air India Plane Was Cut Off Before Deadly Crash, Report Says

Seconds after takeoff and moments before an Air India flight crashed last month, the fuel was cut off to both engines of the plane, investigators said early on Saturday, in a preliminary assessment of information from the Boeing 787’s voice and data recorders.

The narrowed focus on the fuel switches on Air India Flight 171 raised questions about the pilots’ actions and appeared to rule out mechanical failure or design flaws. The report said “there are no recommended actions” to the aircraft and engine manufacturers, Boeing and General Electric.

Investigators look into Air India sabotage theory

The Indian authorities are investigating the possibility that sabotage could have caused the deadly Air India crash.

Murlidhar Mohol, India’s civil aviation minister, said investigators were examining all possibilities, including sabotage, that could have led to Air India Flight 171 plunging from the skies shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad Airport on June 12.

The crash killed at least 260 people, leaving only one survivor, and was the first fatal accident involving a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft.
