Inside the Nightmare at 345 Park Avenue, a Manhattan Office Tower Under Attack

Jon Ferrer was working late Monday evening, reviewing tax returns and trying to get a head start on the week. The KPMG senior tax associate said he heard a faint alarm when he was in the bathroom, but thought nothing of it.

Then an associate walked over to his desk and gave him the horrifying news: There was an active shooter in their office building. “My heart sank to my stomach,” Ferrer said.

He was ushered into a partner’s office with about 15 co-workers, as colleagues pushed a desk across the door and put blankets up on windows in the room. They sat together in a circle.

Vance Boelter’s Life Before the Minnesota Shootings

The sudden change in the teenager was dramatic and unsettling, as if some internal switch had been thrown. Those who knew him could only wonder: What’s come over Vance Boelter?

One moment he was an affable college freshman, pursuing a family passion by trying out for the baseball team. The next, he was giving up the game and shedding his belongings — even his cherished baseball bat — as if to put away childish things.

Suddenly, he was telling dorm mates they were going to hell, denouncing a guest speaker on campus as “Satan’s worker” and announcing he was now “all in for Jesus.” It was a lifelong commitment he would just as suddenly violate 40 years later, prosecutors say, with an act of political assassination that would stun the nation and send his home state of Minnesota into communal mourning.

4 dead, 14 injured in drive-by mass shooting outside Chicago nightclub: report

Four people were killed and 14 others wounded when gunfire erupted outside a Chicago nightclub Wednesday night, CBS Chicago reported, citing authorities.

Police said a drive-by shooting occurred around 11 p.m. outside the Artis Restaurant and Lounge nightclub on the 300 block of West Chicago Avenue in the Near North Side neighborhood of the Windy City.

Revelers were leaving the “high-end dining and nightlife destination” after an album release party for Chicago-based rapper Mello Buckzz.

Odd how this has received so little publicity compared to the Idaho incident. Higher body count, higher number of wounded but much less media.

2 firefighters shot dead, 1 injured after ‘sniper’ ambushes crew responding to Idaho blaze: ‘Did not have a chance’

Two firefighters were killed and a third was injured when first responders were ambushed by an hours-long barrage of gunfire after arriving at the scene of a blaze in Idaho Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

The horrific attack, which began around 2 p.m. local time on Canfield Mountain near Coeur d’Alene, ended about five hours later when SWAT teams discovered the lifeless body of a man next to a firearm on the popular tourist trail, according to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office.

… “We have currently one dead shooter based on the preliminary investigation that was being conducted. Keep in mind we had a fire that was rapidly approaching the body so we had to scoop up that body and we had to transport that body to a different location. We believe that it is the only shooter that was on that mountain at that time.”

School Shootings No Longer Viewed As ‘Uniquely American’

I’ve always thought the concept of mass shootings, such as those in schools, were “uniquely American” was a rather American-centric form of ignorance. These things happen all over the world, after all, and have for ages. Most Americans who like to think of themselves as worldly, though, tend not to be as well-versed on what happens elsewhere as they like to believe.

But I had to acknowledge that it looked like we had a much bigger issue than most places.
