The electric vehicle mandate that would have forced 100 per cent of all new cars sold in Canada to be zero-emission vehicles by 2035 was a typical Trudeau-era policy. It had more to do with preening self-righteousness than anything else. It sacrificed economic growth for green fantasies and was extremely paternalistic. As with most climate-change policies, the objective seemed to be more about control than actually accomplishing anything.
The federal government is expected to announce its national automotive strategy on Thursday that includes scrapping Canada’s electric vehicle mandate and replacing it with a new system of fuel efficiency standards and credits, CBC News has learned.
Two sources say Ottawa is also expected to bring back popular electric vehicle incentives for consumers purchasing electric vehicles.
Money will also be announced to build more charging stations for EVs across Canada to help consumers, a source said.
The federal government is considering bringing back consumer incentives for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids as it finalizes its national automotive strategy, CBC News has learned.
Sources with knowledge of the plans, whom CBC News has agreed not to name because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly, say that a decision on the incentives — and whether they would be similar to a suspended rebate program — has not yet been made.
Canada’s incentive program for zero-emissions vehicles, known as iZEV, was suspended more than a year ago after it ran out of money due to high demand.

The Carney government’s renewed commitment to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions (NZE) by 2050, aided by the Alberta government, in the Canada-Alberta MOU could cost about $2.1 trillion in lost economic activity from business-as-usual (BAU) between 2025 and 2050 and lead to 351,000 lost jobs from BAU by 2050. These are among key insights based on my analysis of data drawn from a 2024 custom research project by Navius Research using its highly regarded gTech/IESD model.
Policy goals, such as Canada NZE 2050, need to be backed up with rigorous modeling and impact analysis. The UN declaration is professedly a pledge to “fight false information” about climate change.
Berlin’s horrendous four-day blackout, which plunged over 45,000 households in the city’s south-west into darkness, is finally over. Recently published remarkable research analysing over 42 million global temperature recordings from nearly 1,000 stations has cast serious doubt on the claimed link between carbon dioxide emissions and rising temperatures. The huge statistical work collected data from before 1900 to 2024 and found an overall annual warming trend of 0.0054°C after adjusting for growing unnatural urban heat effects. What is truly revealing about this important analysis is that it shows an obvious disconnect between the rise in anthropogenic CO2 and the sharpest warming occurring in the early 20th century, when industrialisation was confined to relatively few countries.
2025 marked the 10-year anniversary of the Paris Agreement on climate change, when 195 nations pledged to cut carbon emissions to slow the rise in global temperatures. Yet 10 years on, the political consensus on climate change has all but collapsed. Last year, the seemingly cast-iron conviction that climate change poses an existential threat to humanity – and that we urgently need to eradicate fossil fuels and carbon-intensive industries – came under challenge like never before.
