Democrat congresswoman suggests black people be exempt from paying taxes as form of reparations

A Democratic congresswoman is calling for black Americans to be exempt from paying taxes as a form of reparations — though she admitted that the plan may not work because many poorer black people “aren’t really paying taxes in the first place.”

Jasmine Crockett, a freshman representative from Texas, said she heard a celebrity — though she could not remember which one — propose making black people tax-exempt, and thought, “I don’t know that that’s … necessarily a bad idea,” she recounted in an interview with “The Black Lawyers Podcast” last week.

Tennessee bill to ban slavery reparations draws opposition

A Memphis pastor has started a petition against a bill that would prohibit the study of reparations for descendants of slaves in Tennessee, and in two days, it has more than 500 signatures.

State Sen. Brent Taylor, a Shelby County Republican, is sponsoring the Senate version of the bill, SB0429.

500 signatures doesn’t seem like a groundswell of grassroots support.

Good on Tennessee for the bill.

Slavery tribunal? Africa and Caribbean unite on reparations

April 4 (Reuters) – Support is building among Africa and Caribbean nations for the creation of an international tribunal on atrocities dating to the transatlantic trade of enslaved people, with the United States backing a U.N. panel at the heart of the effort.

A tribunal, modelled on other ad-hoc courts such as the Nuremberg trials of Nazi war criminals after World War Two, was proposed last year. It has now gained traction within a broader slavery reparations movement, Reuters reporting based on interviews with a dozen people reveals.

California Democrat proposes tax on gold, cotton, tobacco, and other ‘slave’ goods to fund reparations

A California Democrat wants to tax sales of gold, cotton, tobacco and other goods linked to slavery — and to divert the money to black residents, in the latest bid to turn reparations into reality.

The bill by Assemblyman Reggie Jones-Sawyer is one of more than a dozen bills backed by the California Legislative Black Caucus seeking reparations for black Californians, especially the descendants of slaves.

They stem from a July 2023 report from the state Reparations Task Force, where Jones-Sawyer served as a member, and underscores efforts to turn controversial policies into a legally-binding compensation scheme.

Church of England told to raise £1bn to ‘address past wrongs of slavery’

The Church of England has been told to raise £1 billion from wealthy donors for a fund set up to address its links to transatlantic slavery.

In January last year, the Church Commissioners, who handle more than £10 billion of assets for the Church of England, announced the establishment of a £100 million fund to “address past wrongs of slavery”.

The pledge came following the publication of a report which found that much of the institution’s wealth originates from the slave trade.

California’s ‘Reparations’ Efforts, To Give Money to Black People, Are ‘Spreading Like Wildfire’: Will State Soon Start Cutting Checks?

The backers of California’s reparations efforts said last summer they want their recommendations to “serve as a blueprint for other states, and eventually, the federal government when they perform the critical task of atoning for this nation’s victimization of African Americans.”

So far, they’re making progress toward the goal of funding programs to benefit Black Americans as recompense for the country’s use of slavery between the late 17th and the mid-19th centuries and what supporters of reparations say were subsequent decades of discrimination.

PBS: Oppose ‘Sacred’ Reparations And You Have White Privilege

PBS released a new America Reframed documentary of Monday about reparations and the taxpayer-funded network went all in with the bad faith smears, strawmen burning, and stereotyping of those who oppose such measures.

They even found Father Brian Paulson of the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States to claim that reparations are something “sacred.” Paulson was shown asking, “What are we up against as we undertake this sacred mission?”
