For Peace, More Ukrainians Consider the Once Unthinkable: Surrendering Land

Khrystyna Yurchenko worked hard to build a life in the eastern Ukrainian region known as the Donbas, where she poured her energy into the popular dance studio she owns.

But she would give it all up, she said, for lasting peace. Ms. Yurchenko is among a growing number of Ukrainians who say they would hand over the part of the Donbas still controlled by Ukraine to Russia if that would end the war.

This represents a notable shift for a war-weary Ukrainian population. Giving up territory that Russia has been unable to capture has long been considered a red line. But what once seemed impossible now appears less so, as the Kremlin insists that U.S.-backed peace negotiations will advance only if Ukraine agrees to walk away from the Donbas.

Putin ‘agrees ceasefire over Ukrainian cities’

Russia has agreed to a partial ceasefire that will stop all attacks on Ukrainian cities for a week, Donald Trump announced.

The US president told a cabinet meeting that he asked Vladimir Putin “not to fire into Kyiv and various towns for a week. And he agreed to do that”.

Under a sustained bombardment of Ukraine’s energy system, millions have been left without power or electricity in temperatures far below zero.

Majority of Europeans Disagree with Fast-Tracking Ukraine’s EU Membership

Answers to Mrs. Hitler

According to the latest findings of Hungarian think tank Századvég’s Europe Project, most Europeans do not support Ukraine joining the European Union through an accelerated accession process that bypasses established membership criteria. While the European Commission is increasingly discussing the possibility of admitting Ukraine as early as 2027 under a fast-tracked procedure, public opinion across the EU clearly moves in the opposite direction.

Survey data show that 75% of respondents do not support accession before the required conditions are fulfilled.

US ‘ties security guarantees to Ukraine giving up Donbas’

The White House has told Ukraine it must cede the Donbas before the US will provide security guarantees, according to reports.

Ukrainian, US and Russian negotiators met for their first three-way peace talks in the United Arab Emirates last week.

Russia has increased the tempo of its airstrikes in recent days, knocking out power for large parts of Ukraine and leaving much of the country to freeze in sub-zero temperatures.

Majority of Europeans Reject Sending Troops and Arms to Ukraine

A new public opinion poll by Hungarian think tank Századvég highlights a growing gap between European Union decision-makers and public sentiment across the continent regarding military involvement in the war in Ukraine. The survey, conducted as part of the think tank’s Project Europe, shows that a majority of Europeans oppose both the deployment of soldiers in Ukraine and the delivery of arms to the eastern front.

According to the findings of the poll, 69% of Europeans reject the idea of sending soldiers to Ukraine, while 51% oppose arms deliveries.

Zelensky Slams Europe, Insults Orbán in Desperate Davos Address

It seems that if it were up to the Ukrainian president, the EU would have already invaded Iran and declared war on Russia.

The annual Davos World Economic Forum saw quite a few remarkable speeches this year, with that of Donald Trump definitely stealing the show. But there were some others, too, that stand out, attempting to emulate the U.S. president’s candor and energy, albeit with varying success.

Trump meets Zelensky as US envoy says ending war with Russia down to one issue

US President Donald Trump has begun talks with Volodymyr Zelensky at Davos on Thursday, after his envoy Steve Witkoff expressed optimism about finalising a deal to end the war in Ukraine.

“I think we’ve got it down to one issue and we have discussed iterations of that issue, and that means it’s solvable,” Witkoff said ahead of his trip to Moscow for talks with Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

Tymoshenko Corruption Case Moves Forward as More EU Money Pledged for Kyiv

Former Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko appeared in court on Friday, January 16th, where a judge is set to determine a pre-trial restraint measure against her in an expanding corruption case. Prosecutors are seeking a bail of UAH 50 million in connection with allegations that she offered undue benefits to members of parliament.

Russia’s war in Ukraine drags on for longer than fight against the Nazis

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has lasted longer than the Soviet Union’s fight against Nazi Germany.

The Soviet army spent 1,418 days, from June 22, 1941 to May 9, 1945, battling Hitler’s troops across Europe, eventually pushing them from the banks of the Volga to Berlin.

As President Putin’s “special military operation” in Ukraine marked its 1,419th day on Monday, his troops remain bogged down in the Donetsk region, just 30 miles from where they launched their offensive in February 2022.

How Liberal MP Chrystia Freeland’s exit from Parliament was hastened

Ex-finance minister faced growing backlash over Ukraine advisory role before announcing Friday departure

Former Liberal finance minister Chrystia Freeland said she plans to vacate her seat in the House of Commons by week’s end after facing heat from the opposition to do so immediately over an advisory role with the Ukrainian government.

The Coalition of Wishful Thinking

The citizens of England and France are being raped and murdered by Islamists but Macron and Starmer will somehow guarantee Ukraine’s safety

It was quite the performance at the Élysée on Tuesday afternoon. Nearly 30 European leaders, plus US envoys, were gathered for a suitably wintery summit on the war in Ukraine. This, the 15th meeting of the so-called Coalition of the Willing since its launch last March, had a different feel to the previous 14. And so it proved. After several hours of talks, the Anglo-French-led coalition backing Ukraine seemed to have actually produced something. A ’declaration of intent’ no less.

Terry Newman: Freeland to lead Ukraine’s economic recovery? Don’t make me laugh

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Monday that he appointed former finance minister Chrystia Freeland as an economic advisor based on her “extensive experience in attracting investment and implementing economic transformations.” Yet it’s hard to see how Freeland’s economic experience would benefit war-stricken Ukraine. Worse, she accepted the position without informing her constituents first.

BORG: Divided loyalties — Freeland has no business cashing a paycheque from another government

A sitting Member of Parliament (MP) should not be serving a foreign government. That principle ought to be uncontroversial in a parliamentary democracy.

Yet it is now being tested by Chrystia Freeland’s decision to accept an advisory role with the Ukrainian government while continuing to hold a seat in Canada’s House of Commons.

It’s so shady but so normal for the Liberal Party.
