Pentagon accused of blocking effort to hand Russia war crimes evidence to ICC

Defence department reportedly unwilling to share intelligence over fears precedent could be set against US soldiers

The Pentagon has been accused of blocking the sharing of US intelligence with the international criminal court (ICC) about Russian war crimes in Ukraine.

The Biden White House and state department have been a proponent of cooperation with the Hague-based ICC, as a means of holding Russian forces accountable for widespread war crimes, but the defence department is firmly opposed on the grounds that the precedent could eventually be turned against US soldiers.

Inside the $300m celebrity fundraising network bringing Ukraine’s fight to Russia

Barbra Streisand is better known for crooning pop ballads than as the face of a fundraiser for explosive kamikaze drones. But when she agreed to help procure medical aid for President Zelensky’s initiative last September, she soon found herself part of a celebrity network resisting the Kremlin war machine.
The fundraising platform, United24, expects to have raised $300 million to help Ukraine by the end of next month and is only $7 million shy of its goal. It counts Star Wars’ Mark Hamill, the Chelsea football legend Andriy Shevchenko, Netflix Vikings’ star Katheryn Winnick, the heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk and the Balenciaga creative director Demna among its wide range of ambassadors.

Did the Ukrainians bomb the Nord Stream pipeline?

There’s an uncomfortable fact about covert operations in the information-saturated modern world. Like personal WhatsApp messages, they always leak – the only questions are how long it takes, who leaks, and what the consequences will be.

With reports coming from both Washington and Berlin that Ukrainians may have been behind the spectacular bombings of the Nord Stream gas pipeline back in September, it looks as if the current lag is just months.

Nord Stream II attack would be the biggest blunder of the Zelensky regime

If the Ukraine president knew about any attack on the pipeline what would that say about his judgment

… If he did not know about it – reports in the German and American press suggest it was an off-the-books operation by a small group of mavericks unconnected to the government – then how did private individuals access that much explosive?

Mr Zelensky may be diplomatically savvy. But there are people in the Ukrainian intelligence and military apparatus with a blunter appetite for action and fewer inhibitions about allies’ opinions.

Last week, a Russian volunteer unit led by a prominent neo-Nazi mounted a brief but massively self-publicised raid across the border into Russia’s Bryansk region – to no obvious military advantage.

I bet Freeland knows.

Germany searches suspect vessel linked to Nord Stream pipeline attack

German prosecutors say they have searched a vessel suspected to have been used in the bombing of the Nord Stream gas pipelines last September, following reports that the sabotage was carried out by a small “pro-Ukrainian” cell.

Western officials believe the explosives were placed at the bottom of the Baltic sea by two specialist divers operating from a rented yacht, according to a joint investigation by three German media outlets.

The vessel is alleged to be based on Germany’s Baltic coast but owned by a Polish-registered company that ultimately belongs to two Ukrainians.

If Bakhmut Falls: What The Battle For A City Of Little Military Significance Means For The Ukraine War

A kettle. A cauldron. A pincer. A meat grinder. A carpet of corpses. A death trap.

A decisive battle?

Since at least August, a motley crew of Russian regular forces and soldiers from the notorious Wagner private mercenary company have been throwing World-War-I-style waves of infantry at Bakhmut, trying to dislodge Ukraine’s entrenched defense from the small city in the eastern Donetsk region.

That fighting was eclipsed in recent months by Ukraine’s counteroffensives to the north, in the Kharkiv region, and to the southwest, around Kherson, on the west bank of the Dnieper River.

In NordStream bombings probe, German investigators see Ukraine link, reports say

BERLIN — German prosecutors have found “traces” of evidence indicating that Ukrainians may have been involved in the explosions that blew up the Nord Stream gas pipelines in September 2022, according to German media reports Tuesday.

Investigators identified a boat that was potentially used for transporting a crew of six people, diving equipment and explosives into the Baltic Sea in early September. Charges were then placed on the pipelines, according to a joint investigation by German public broadcasters ARD and SWR as well as the newspaper Die Zeit.

The German reports said that the yacht had been rented from a company based in Poland that is “apparently owned by two Ukrainians.”

From the Guardian – Officials believe pro-Ukraine group may have sabotaged Nord Stream – reports

European and US intelligence officials have obtained tentative intelligence to suggest a pro-Ukrainian saboteur group may have been behind the bombing of the Nord Stream gas pipelines last year, according to reports in the New York Times and German newspaper Die Zeit.

German investigators believe the attack on the pipelines was carried out by a team of six people, using a yacht that had been hired by a company registered in Poland and owned by two Ukrainian citizens, according to Die Zeit.

The information has been shared between European intelligence agencies in an effort to establish more information about those who carried out the undersea bombings in September, an attack that had left western governments perplexed.

Now Germany suspects an unknown “Ukraine Affiliated” group of sabotaging the pipelines. The Politico story seems fanciful, a hired boat was returned “uncleaned” leaving convenient traces of explosives to be discovered.

It will be interesting to how the German and Euro public in general react to this. It can’t be good for the alliance.

Who wants to foot the war bill for an ally who caused you an energy crisis?

Intelligence Suggests Pro-Ukrainian Group Sabotaged Pipelines, U.S. Officials Say

WASHINGTON — New intelligence reviewed by U.S. officials suggests that a pro-Ukrainian group carried out the attack on the Nord Stream pipelines last year, a step toward determining responsibility for an act of sabotage that has confounded investigators on both sides of the Atlantic for months.

U.S. officials said that they had no evidence President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine or his top lieutenants were involved in the operation, or that the perpetrators were acting at the direction of any Ukrainian government officials.

The brazen attack on the natural gas pipelines, which link Russia to Western Europe, fueled public speculation about who was to blame, from Moscow to Kyiv and London to Washington, and it has remained one of the most consequential unsolved mysteries of Russia’s year-old war in Ukraine.

A shadowy group supportive of Ukraine but unknown to Zelensky! How convenient!

This ought to go over well with Ukraine’s allies, the ones suffering from an energy crisis. Great way to win hearts and minds.

But why is the US making this public? Is it designed to force Ukraine to the peace talks table?

Not buying this. My money is still on the US.

Are sanctions REALLY wrecking life in Russia? As British supermarkets ration eggs and vegetables shelves in a provincial Russian city are GROANING

These revealing photographs show shop shelves in a provincial Russian city groaning under piles of fresh food.

As British supermarkets ration eggs and an array of fruit and vegetables amid shortages provoked in large part by the Ukraine war, no such hardships afflict Vladimir Putin’s citizens.

The pictures were taken at a food hall, two superstores and a corner shop in Perm, a city with a population the size of Birmingham in the Ural mountains, a 24-hour drive from Moscow. The images suggest the West’s much-vaunted sanctions on Russia, imposed to punish President Putin for his invasion, are not having a deep bite.

Ukraine urges ICC to investigate video appearing to show Russians killing PoW

Ukraine has urged the international criminal court to investigate footage circulating on social media that appeared to show Russian fighters killing a Ukrainian prisoner of war.

In the graphic clip that first circulated on Telegram, a detained combatant is seen standing in a shallow trench and smoking a cigarette. The soldier says “Glory to Ukraine” and is then apparently shot with automatic weapons.

Is Putin winning? The world order is changing in his favour

‘This is not about Ukraine at all, but the world order,’ said Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, a month after the invasion. ‘The unipolar world is irretrievably receding into the past … A multi-polar world is being born.’ The US is no longer the world’s policeman, in other words – a message that resonates in countries that have long been suspicious of American power. The West’s core coalition may remain solid, but it has failed to win over many of the countries that refused to pick sides. Moscow’s diplomatic mission to build ties and hone a narrative over the past decade has paid dividends.

Look at Africa. In March last year, 25 African states out of 54 abstained or didn’t vote in a UN motion condemning the invasion, despite huge pressure from western powers. Their refusal to side clearly with Ukraine was testament to Russia’s ongoing diplomatic efforts in the developing world.

Ukraine war: Russia’s Wagner boss suggests ‘betrayal’ in Bakhmut battle

The head of Russia’s Wagner private army says it is not getting the ammunition it needs from Moscow, as it seeks to gain control of Bakhmut.

The eastern city has seen months of intense fighting, as Wagner and regular Russian troops try to seize it.

But Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin says his army’s lack of ammunition could be “ordinary bureaucracy or a betrayal”.

Ukraine’s president and military commanders have agreed to strengthen their defence of Bakhmut.

Ryodan teenagers ‘trying to destablise Russia and Ukraine’

A youth subculture whose members dress in black clothes decorated with spiders has been accused of seeking to destabilise both Russia and Ukraine after a series of mass brawls.

Little was known about the PMC Ryodan movement until last weekend, when more than 450 teenagers were arrested in Russia after fights broke out at shopping centres from St Petersburg to Siberia. Within days, the movement had spread to Ukraine, where at least 250 teens were detained by police in war-torn Kharkiv as they gathered to take part in pre-arranged clashes.

‘Huge’ star-studded Live Aid-style gig announced at Wembley to raise money for Ukraine

A huge Ukraine benefit concert is set to be held at Wembley this summer, with proceeds going to the victims of the ongoing Russian invasion.

The Live Aid-style gig has been scheduled for June 24 at Wembley stadium, with big-name artists such as U2, The Rolling Stones, The Killers, and Pink all being asked to perform.

It is thought that other high-profile musicians, such as Sir Paul McCartney, Adele, Florence And The Machine and Noel Gallagher may also be approached to perform at the concert.

I hate Bono.
