Canada pushes to join Eurovision: ‘This is about protecting our identity’

The prestige of Eurovision – I don’t want anything to do with this identity

When Canada released its federal budget this month, much of it was standard fare, from the plans to downsize the public service to the boost in defence spending.

But one line tucked in the nearly 500-page document has captured imaginations on both sides of the Atlantic: a mention that the government is working with Canada’s national broadcaster to explore participation in the Eurovision song contest.

Germany agrees new military service plan to boost troop numbers

Germany’s coalition government has agreed a new military service plan to boost troop numbers following months of wrangling between political forces.

Klinger Self Pre-screen

The new military service plan will mandate all 18-year-old men to fill out a questionnaire on their suitability to serve and, from 2027, to undergo medical screening.

The decision comes as Berlin aims to create Europe’s strongest conventional army.

The boss of Germany’s biggest defence firm, Rheinmetall, has told the BBC he believes that target could be met in five years.

Black monks and villagers feature in title showing Scotland’s history as multicultural

Children’s book portrays Picts as black

The Picts have been depicted as black in a new book intended to show that Scotland has always been “multicultural and diverse”.

An illustrated book has been created to make the history of the Picts, who flourished from around 300 AD to 900 AD, more accessible to young people.

Illustrations in the volume depict the early inhabitants of north-east Scotland as multiracial, with black monks, bishops, religious healers and ordinary villagers.

Whoever engages in such antics should be horse whipped.
