Today In Bad Ideas: Canadian government considers criminalizing hate and terror symbols

OTTAWA—The Liberal government is weighing the criminalization of displaying terror and hate symbols, a potentially precedent-setting move in Canada that has prompted concerns about civil liberties.

It’s not yet clear if a possible ban would focus on specific symbols, like the swastika, or if it would broadly cover any symbols related to designated terror groups. And no final decision has yet been made on whether to go through with the Criminal Code reforms, which were being mulled by the Trudeau government prior to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s ascent to the Liberal leadership and his victory in the spring election, according to a transition briefing to the minister of justice from March 2025 that was made public last week.

We have experience of laws ostensibly designed to safeguard the public good being weaponized by the Liberal-Left to criminalize dissent.

That assault on liberty is on-going and we should not repeat errors of the past.

Most US Abrams Tanks in Ukraine Now Lost, Captured, or Abandoned

When the United States delivered 31 M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine in September 2023, the move was heralded as a potential turning point in Kyiv’s fight against Russia, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy calling them a “game changer.”

The Abrams, a symbol of American armored dominance, have dominated second- and third-tier militaries like Iraq’s in the 1991 Gulf War, where superior tactics and training, combined with the Abram’s advanced armor and fire control systems, allowed U.S forces to utterly dominate Iraqi armored forces. Yet, since their arrival in Ukraine, these “wonder weapons” have faltered badly. By July 2025, at least 22 of the tanks were destroyed, damaged, abandoned, or captured. Some estimates place this number as high as 27. This outcome, far from shocking, was predictable, as expectations based on triumphs over weaker foes like Iraq were wildly unrealistic.

CBC hands out record-breaking raises to offset loss of executive bonuses

OTTAWA — Just months after Canada’s national broadcaster announced the end of big-money bonuses to its senior execs, newly-obtained documents suggest the CBC handed out a record-setting amount of raises during the previous fiscal year.

In access-to-information documents obtained by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, the CBC handed out no bonuses in 2024-25, but awarded $37.7 million in wage hikes to 6,295 employees.

Does it really take 6K of people to make crap?

AOC’s office vandalised by pro-Palestine protesters

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s New York office has been vandalised after she voted against cutting US funding for Israel.

The outside of the Left-wing congresswoman’s office in the Bronx was smeared in red paint on Sunday, and a sign reading “AOC funds genocide in Gaza” in red letters was displayed on the shutters outside.

Ms Ocasio-Cortez, a long-time critic of Israel and the war in Gaza, angered many of her supporters on Friday when she broke with her progressive allies to vote against an amendment cutting millions of dollars in aid for Israel’s missile defence.

Pete Buttigieg’s DOT spent $80 billion on DEI grants, delayed air traffic control upgrades: records, industry insiders

WASHINGTON — Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg failed to replace outdated air traffic control systems while in office — with his agency instead shelling out tens of billions of dollars on a DEI agenda, according to federal spending records and airline industry insiders.

In one meeting, Buttigieg — who is said to be eyeing a 2028 presidential run — told industry executives that air traffic control upgrades would just allow them to fly more planes, “and so why would that be in his interest?” sources said.

WNBA players demand to be paid what they’re worth

Yesterday, the WNBA had an All-Star game. This is an interesting concept because the WNBA actually has only one star: Caitlin Clark. The rest of the players are vengeful women who I’ve been told play about as well as high school boys. (I wouldn’t know myself, having never seen a game.)

What made the game newsworthy was that the women showed up in shirts emblazoned with the words “Pay Us What You Owe Us.” Considering that the WNBA has never turned a profit, they’ve just demanded a salary of ZERO.

Swedish Priest Under Media Fire for Refusing To Wear Rainbow Vestment

Multiple leftist media outlets attacked Swedish pastor Håkan Persson, the parish priest of Markaryd, after a recent social media post in which he criticized the new rainbow-colored, LGBT-friendly vestments designed to be the symbol of the progressivism of the Church of Sweden.

In his Facebook post, Persson stated that the rainbow-colored chasuble and stole, designed at the initiative of the Västerås diocese, “will not enter Markaryd’s church as long as I am vicar.”

ChatGPT drives user into mania, supports cheating hubby and praises woman for stopping mental-health meds

ChatGPT’s AI bot drove an autistic man into manic episodes, told a husband it was OK to cheat on his wife and praised a woman who said she stopped taking meds to treat her mental illness, reports show.

Jacob Irwin, 30, who is on the autism spectrum, became convinced he had the ability to bend time after the chatbot’s responses fueled his growing delusions, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Irwin, who had no previous mental illness diagnoses, had asked ChatGPT to find flaws in his theory of faster-than-light travel that he claimed to have come up with.
