Ottawa looking for ways to mend tears in Canada’s social fabric, document shows

OTTAWA — Senior federal officials have been looking quietly for ways to bring together Canadians who don’t see eye to eye on the economy, immigration and social issues.

With a general election looming, officials prepared to meet last November to brainstorm solutions to the problem of social fragmentation, according to an internal presentation drafted by the Department of Canadian Heritage.

The presentation called on session participants to come up with ideas to make Canadian society more cohesive by reversing the trend toward polarization, building trust in government agencies and fighting the swelling tide of misinformation and disinformation.

Gay railway station volunteer banned over gender-critical views

Big Gay Choo Choo Train

A gay volunteer was banned from a railway group after expressing his gender-critical views on email and social media.

Matthew Toomer, 48, was thrown out of West Midlands Railway’s “Adopt a Station” scheme after he privately contacted company bosses to express concern about its “Progress Pride” train.

WMR rebranded one of its trains last summer with a “rainbow diamond motif” that bares similarities to the Progress Pride flag, which features a yellow diamond. It was also named “Hurst Street” after the Birmingham road at the centre of the city’s Gay Village.

HUNTER: Why was U.S. teen accused of Riverdale murders in Canada?

The 17-year-old accused of gunning down two Toronto men in Riverdale last month is an American citizen, the Toronto Sun has learned.

Cops say the boy — who can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act — was arrested Saturday and charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

Investigators believe that Quentin Caza, 18, and Jeremy McNeil, 20, both of Toronto, were lured to the Riverdale area around 11 p.m. on April 15.
