Trump accuses British artist of painting ‘truly worst’ portrait of him

Donald Trump has called for a portrait of himself to be taken down from the Colorado state capitol, lashing out at the artist for “truly the worst” attempt to capture his features.

“Nobody likes a bad picture or painting of themselves,” the president wrote, but the Colorado portrait was “purposely distorted to a level that even I, perhaps, have never seen before”.

The painting depicts the president with a “serious, thoughtful, non-confontational” expression, Sarah Boardman, the British artist, said after it was commissioned in 2018.

Revealed: China’s new weapon that can cut any undersea cable

Chinese researchers have developed a compact, deep-sea device capable of severing even the most fortified underwater cables.

The development raises concerns that Beijing could target critical communication and power lines, especially in the event of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.

The tool can slice armoured cables at depths of up to 4,000 metres (13,123 feet), which is twice the maximum operational range of existing subsea communication infrastructure, according to an academic paper seen by the South China Morning Post.

A British Columbia judge has annulled the marriage of a woman to a fellow member of an India-based “cult group,” saying she didn’t “truly consent” to the 2023 wedding.

The B.C. Supreme Court ruling issued this week says the woman claimed she was manipulated and overwhelmed by a “barrage” of overtures from the man and his family that began in October 2022.

Migrant avoids deportation because he lost his phone

An illegal Iraqi migrant who fled his country over his part in an alleged exam fraud has avoided deportation after claiming a people smuggler threw away his ID and phone.

The man fled Iraq after being threatened with arrest for an alleged exam fraud when he was caught on CCTV delivering test papers to an address a day before students were due to sit for the qualification.

He claimed that an “agent” who facilitated his passage to the UK had not only thrown away his ID documents but also made him get rid of his phone, on which he had his family’s numbers.

JFK files expose family secrets: Their relatives were CIA assets

Growing up, John Smith knew his grandfather as a serious academic — a bespectacled professor at the University of Maryland who wrote books on pre-Civil War presidents. He also knew E.B. Smith had traveled the world in his younger years.

What he didn’t know until this week is that his grandfather had once been a U.S. government asset, feeding Soviet-era intelligence to the CIA.

The Trump administration’s release of more than 77,000 pages related to the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy has thus far shed little new light on the killing. But the unmasking of many previously redacted names has revealed the identities of people who worked with the clandestine services, roles that in many cases were hidden for decades even from close family members.

What’s the German word for Schadenfreude? Toronto Tesla owners grapple with politics of Musk and Trump amid thorny trade war

When Deborah Wilson first bought her Tesla Model Y in 2022, she loved it.

A resident of Toronto’s Beaches neighbourhood and a busy mother of two, she found it nimble and fun to drive. Plus, it was an environmentally sound purchase and saved her money on gas at a time when every trip to the pump was pricey.

But since then, she’s become increasingly self-conscious driving it around town amid U.S. President Donald Trump‘s threat of annexation and close relationship with Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has stirred up significant controversy of his own.

Gen Z consumers say Buy Canadian movement is unaffordable

Gen Z Shopping in the Buy Canadian era

Like many postsecondary students, Charlotte Fowler is careful about how she spends her money.

Her books and clothes are bought locally, often from thrift stores. She takes a pass on the $6 baskets of blueberries. And as much as she’d like to get behind the Buy Local movement and avoid anything from the United States, she said spending extra isn’t something she can afford.
