Serial rapist Sofyan Boalag sues after being stabbed in N.B. prison, left unable to walk

A man who terrorized women in St. John’s in 2012 is now suing the federal government, saying he’ll never walk again after being stabbed at a prison in Renous, N.B.

Sofyan Boalag’s statement of claim says he was incarcerated at the Atlantic Institution on Feb. 3, 2023, when prison staff opened the doors to all cells in one corridor simultaneously so inmates could line up for medication.

Boalag says he was attacked from behind and stabbed repeatedly.

N.L. launched a basic income program for older adults. So far, just 110 have enrolled

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — Only 110 people have enrolled so far in Newfoundland and Labrador’s basic income program for some older adults, a figure advocates say underscores the complexity of traditional social assistance programs that often leave users afraid of losing benefits.

That figure represents less than one-third of the approximately 350 people who qualify for the program, officially launched in May, said the province’s Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development.

Josh Smee, chief executive of the non-profit Food First N.L., said he wasn’t surprised enrollment seemed low.

Drug dealer allowed to stay in Britain after promising to only smoke cannabis

A Jamaican drug dealer avoided deportation after he promised to only smoke cannabis and not sell it.

Jamaican Shawn Rickford McLeod, 40, who came to Britain in 2000 was issued with a deportation order after being jailed for three years and four months for three counts of supplying class A drugs.

He appealed the order on the grounds that it would breach his rights to a family life under Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) as he had three young children in the UK with his wife.
