An employee at a jewellery shop in Tokyo has been hailed a hero after thwarting an attempted robbery and giving chase after the three suspects fled. But the hero of the hour wasn’t armed with a Taser or pepper spray, but with a weapon invented hundreds of years ago by samurai warriors: the sasumata, a pole with two prongs attached to the end.

Ottawa taking legal action to recoup anti-racism funds from Laith Marouf: bureaucrat

The Department of Canadian Heritage has taken legal action to recoup funds it paid to a consultant accused of posting antisemitic material online, Deputy Minister Isabelle Mondou said Thursday.

The federal government terminated a contract last year with the Community Media Advocacy Centre after it granted the group more than $122,000 for projects to help combat racism.

Montreal-area ‘Chinese police stations’ threaten to sue RCMP for $2.5 million

Two Chinese community centres in the Montreal area are threatening to launch a $2.5 million lawsuit against the RCMP after being accused by the police force of hosting “alleged Chinese police stations.”

The RCMP confirmed in March(opens in a new tab) it had opened an investigation into the Service à la Famille Chinoise du Grand Montréal, in Montreal’s Chinatown, and the Centre Sino-Québec de la Rive-Sud, in Brossard, on the South Shore of Montreal.

Toronto Public Library Welcomes Radical Anti-Israel Author

TORONTO – B’nai Brith Canada is urging the Toronto Public Library (TPL) to cancel its event, scheduled to feature a controversial American whose writings wrongly accuse Israel of manipulating the Holocaust to suppress criticism.

Norman Finkelstein, a former political science professor who has been denied tenure in the past over his extreme writings, has been invited to participate at the TPL’s Dec. 5 event – part of an “Intellectual Freedom” program series about free speech in academic settings.

Tories Suggest CBC Could Get a Third of Google’s $100M Annual Payout

Conservative Party MP Rachel Thomas has expressed concerns that public broadcaster CBC could receive the lion’s share of Google’s $100 million annual payment to Canadian media while smaller publishers see few benefits from the deal.

Ms. Thomas, who serves as her party’s heritage critic, says she assumes CBC could be receiving $33 million based on the fact that the public broadcaster employs a third of journalists in Canada.

Forbes publishes new ‘hall of shame’ naming 10 people it regrets featuring on prized 30 under 30 list – with jailed FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried taking inevitable top spot

Forbes has published a new ‘Hall of Shame’ with 10 people it regrets featuring on its famous 30 Under 30 list in recent years.

FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried was the first person named on the new list after he was found guilty of $10billion in crypto fraud on November 2. He was featured on the prestigious Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2021.

Caroline Ellison, his ex-girlfriend and former co-CEO of FTX sister company Alameda, was also included in the Hall of Shame.

That’s quite a record.
