Startup aimed to reshape media – and learned ‘news is hard’ the hard way

Two-year-old Canadian local news startup had heady plans when founded, but now trims jobs while execs snipe at workers on Twitter

Nearly two years ago, a journalism startup made bold promises to reshape community news in Canada, announcing plans to hire more than 200 journalists and open 50 new publications across the country.

But this month, as they culled nearly half the staff from their most successful publication, executives from the Overstory media group admitted that – despite the cascade of recent failures across the industry – they had thought turning a profit in local journalism would be “a lot simpler”. The job cuts have raised larger questions over the company’s future, and about that of alternative models of experimental journalism.

Anyone ever hear of this company?

Wakanda Forever borrows from Wagner Group playbook

The film’s anti-French tropes lean into Russian militia group’s propaganda

This weekend, a clip from the Hollywood film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, tweeted out by French journalist Jean Bexon, went viral. It depicts a group of rapacious French mercenaries humiliated and forced to take the knee in front of the United Nations for attempting to loot an African country’s natural resources. The country is fictional, but the parallels were clear enough for the French Minister of Defence Sébastien Lecornu to “strongly condemn this false and deceptive representation of [France’s] armed forces.”

Berlin University Tells Students Not to Call Cops on Sex Offender.

Leftism is at war with reality: women are men, men are the first female admirals and champion female swimmers, Old Joe Biden is competent, capable and coherent, drag queens are suitable entertainers for primary school children, and on and on and on. But every war has its casualties, as Leftists are learning these days at Free University in Berlin. A sex offender has been running wild and harassing women there for weeks, but the university has warned the victims not to call the police. The reason why they shouldn’t is as obvious as it is outrageous: the sex offender is a migrant, so calling the cops on him would be “racist.”

U.S. tracked China spy balloon from launch on Hainan Island along unusual path

The large Chinese surveillance device that flew across Alaska and the continental United States may have been diverted on an errant path caused by unusual weather conditions

By the time a Chinese spy balloon crossed into American airspace late last month, U.S. military and intelligence agencies had been tracking it for nearly a week, watching as it lifted off from its home base near China’s south coast, an earlier sighting of the balloon than has been previously known.

As for the rest of them… OOPS!

White House Says Mystery Objects Likely Private Craft Not Tied to Spying

“The intelligence community’s considering as a leading explanation that these could just be balloons tied to some commercial or benign purpose,” John Kirby, a spokesperson for the White House’s National Security Council, told multiple news outlets on Tuesday. Kirby further asserted that unidentified objects that were downed in Alaska, the Yukon, and over Lake Huron were not tied to spying efforts, unlike the high-altitude balloon that was shot down earlier this month over the Atlantic Ocean.

What if the Balloon people came in peace? With a cure for cancer?
