Average Canadian family spent 42.3% of income on taxes in 2024: study

The average Canadian family spent 42.3 per cent of their income on taxes in 2024, according to a new study from the Fraser Institute.

The report from the Fraser Institute showed the average Canadian family, which it estimates to have earned an income of $114,289 last year, paid about $48,306 in total taxes to the federal, provincial, and municipal governments.

“At a time when the cost of living is top of mind across the country, taxes remain the largest household expense for Canadian families,” said Jake Fuss, director of fiscal studies at the Fraser Institute in a news release.

Shipping Companies Suddenly Avoiding EVs

We’ve covered enough of these rather spectacular shipboard fires here that I’d imagine most everyone has a pretty good idea what this is in reference to.

Boats packed to the gills with thousands of vehicles, even if only a small percentage of them aboard are electric, become floating, unquenchable volcanic islands when the lithium batteries in one or more of the EVs overheat or explode, and start burning. Almost invariably, they take the entire ship with them.

US ‘hitwoman’s DNA found on gun parts sent to UK’

The DNA of an American woman alleged to have been involved in a failed assassination attempt was found on gun parts illegally sent to the UK more than a month later, a court has heard.

Aimee Betro, 45, is alleged to have flown from Wisconsin as part of a plot orchestrated by co-conspirators Mohammed Aslam, 56, and Mohammed Nabil Nazir, 31, of Derby, to attack a rival family on Sept 7 2019.

A trial at Birmingham Crown Court heard on Tuesday that Ms Betro had been involved in “yet another” of Mr Nazir’s plots to take revenge on a rival when she was alleged to have sent three parcels full of ammunition and gun parts to the UK on Oct 16 2019.

Denied A Free Car! 14 yr Old Teen Demon accused of fatally stabbing 71-year-old grandmother reached out on social media, confessed in livestream

A Toronto YouTuber said he was contacted by police after hosting a livestream with a teen boy claiming responsibility for the fatal stabbing of a 71-year-old woman in North York.

In the livestream, archived on social media, the boy is barely visible, his eyes peeking out from above a dark face covering, shadowed by a large hood, as the interviewer questioned him about the stabbing.

“I didn’t even mean to f—-ing kill the old lady,” the teen said. “I was trying to get the ‘v’ from her as a free car.”

“It went left,” the boy continued. “She didn’t give me the keys so I yoked her.”

Denied a Free Car! Clearly Demon Boy is the real victim and we must bear that collective burden.

Trump administration releases files on Martin Luther King Jr

US President Donald Trump’s administration has released a trove of records on the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr, including FBI surveillance files on the civil rights leader.

A court-imposed order had kept the documents, totalling 230,000 pages, blocked from public view since 1977.

Prominent members of King’s family had opposed the release. A statement from his two living children condemned “any attempts to misuse these documents in ways intended to undermine our father’s legacy”.

Nîmes Becomes Latest French City to Introduce “Youth Curfew” to Curb Migrant Violence

Police remain skeptical: “Young offenders are shooting people with impunity, in broad daylight. A curfew is certainly not going to stop them.”

The southern French city of Nîmes, home to over 150,000 people, has decided to implement a nightly curfew for minors under the age of 16 as a desperate attempt to curb the spread of gang violence largely linked to drug trafficking in the city’s migrant-heavy neighborhoods.

The curfew runs between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., and came into effect on the night of Monday, July 21st, for an initial two-week period that can be renewed every 15 days.

According to local authorities, the radical measure is needed because of “a succession of shootings, score-settling, and gang tensions” that have been gripping the city for the past weeks.

Hockey Canada verdict could break new ground on sexual consent

A verdict this week in the prosecution of five hockey players on sexual-assault charges could break new ground on the question of what constitutes voluntary consent, in cases of an apparent power imbalance – in this instance, multiple men in a hotel room with an intoxicated woman most of them had never met.

The trial, which heard closing submissions last month, has given a rare national profile to how the criminal-justice system addresses sexual assault. The trial’s many unusual elements, including seven days of cross-examination of the complainant, and allegations against five young men from Canada’s 2018 gold medal-winning world junior team, have combined to give this case a broad importance in social and legal terms.

Front and centre is the issue of consent.

IKEA ‘Unlawfully’ Fires Christian Employee Who Refused To Use Trans Pronouns: Legal Watchdog

An Indiana IKEA employee was fired after refusing to call his co-worker “they/them” and filed an official complaint due to “unlawful termination,” the Indiana Family Institute said in a Wednesday press release.

Steven Ressler, a “devout Christian who believes there are only two genders” and who’s worked at IKEA since 2019, was under investigation in December for “misgendering” his co-worker. Soon after, Ressler filed for a “religious accommodation request” to “inform my employer of my religious beliefs and engage in the interactive process in good faith,” the press release said.

The Islamophilia of King Charles

Among those attending the 40th anniversary bash for the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, one guest stood out – King Charles III.

The presence of the UK’s sovereign at an Islamic studies institute was hardly a surprise, however. And not just because he is the centre’s patron. Charles, it is fair to say, is an unabashed Islamophile. He may have claimed some three decades ago that, as king, he intended to be the defender of faith – rather than the defender of the faith as his official role has it – but there is definitely one faith that he prefers above all others. And it’s not that of the Church of England.

VANCOUVER — The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms says a nurse who was sanctioned by the B.C. College of Nurses and Midwives has filed two human rights complaints with the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal.

A disciplinary panel with the college determined Amy Hamm committed unprofessional conduct for making “discriminatory and derogatory statements” about transgender people earlier this year.
