Today In Bad Ideas: Canadian government considers criminalizing hate and terror symbols

OTTAWA—The Liberal government is weighing the criminalization of displaying terror and hate symbols, a potentially precedent-setting move in Canada that has prompted concerns about civil liberties.

It’s not yet clear if a possible ban would focus on specific symbols, like the swastika, or if it would broadly cover any symbols related to designated terror groups. And no final decision has yet been made on whether to go through with the Criminal Code reforms, which were being mulled by the Trudeau government prior to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s ascent to the Liberal leadership and his victory in the spring election, according to a transition briefing to the minister of justice from March 2025 that was made public last week.

We have experience of laws ostensibly designed to safeguard the public good being weaponized by the Liberal-Left to criminalize dissent.

That assault on liberty is on-going and we should not repeat errors of the past.

China’s Increasingly Aggressive Incursions into the Indo-Pacific

Media reports reveal that China is extending its military reach ever deeper into the Pacific. China is using its powerful naval fleet to remind nations throughout the region that it is the communist giant of the 21st century. Of particular note is that these ships include aircraft carriers that are challenging to build and operate. Mastering naval aviation is a sign of a competent, professional and well-armed navy.

Military analysts note that these Chinese assets sailed around the continent of Australia earlier this year. The expedition was an unmistakable message to democratic Australia that China will send its fleet where it wants, when it wants, and for whatever purpose it deems appropriate.

Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill means Canada falls further behind in the race to attract top talent

This month, the United States Congress passed President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill, which, among other things, extended and made permanent the income tax rate reductions and revised tax brackets first brought in through the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, namely a 2.6 percentage point cut to the top bracket. This should raise alarm bells for policymakers north of the border, as Canada will continue to have uncompetitive personal income tax rates compared to our American counterparts and fall even farther behind in the race to attract entrepreneurs, professionals, investors, and top talent.

Trucking’s uneasy relationship with new tech

When Jared first started out in trucking more than two decades ago, he didn’t anticipate he’d be on tour with a country music star, hauling guitars, amps, and other pieces of on-stage equipment.

“It just happened, right place, right time,” the Canadian driver, who prefers not to use his surname, explains from behind the wheel of his towering lorry.

“I’ve done 5,000 miles in a month and a half, but there’s a lot of breaks this year.”

But during time off between driving to shows in New Jersey, New York, Toronto and Nashville, Jared will be scanning multiple screens in his cabin – a laptop, tablet and two smart phones – to secure more work. All made possible by new technology.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Department of Justice wants to interview Jeffrey Epstein’s former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell, who was convicted of helping the financier sexually abuse underage girls and is now serving a lengthy prison sentence, a senior official said Tuesday.

If Maxwell “has information about anyone who has committed crimes against victims, the FBI and the DOJ will hear what she has to say,” Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a post on X, adding that President Donald Trump ”has told us to release all credible evidence.” A lawyer for Maxwell confirmed there were discussions with the government.

CHARLEBOIS: Time for Canadians to serve themselves

Crushed a generation’s dreams

The federal government’s recent overhaul of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) for food service has prompted predictable outcry from restaurant operators.

As of January 2025, new caps limit TFWs to just 10% of a food service business’s workforce — down from 20% or more in recent years — and shorten work permits from two years to one. But this policy shift is not punitive. It reflects an overdue economic recalibration.

Put plainly, the TFWP in food service has run its course.

Poilievre, Conservative MPs criticize Crown ahead of Freedom Convoy leaders’ sentencing

Several Conservative MPs and leader Pierre Poilievre are criticizing the Crown’s approach to prosecuting two key organizers of the Freedom Convoy protests, with the party’s deputy leader calling it an act of “political vengeance.”

Tamara Lich and Chris Barber were convicted of mischief in April for their roles in organizing the demonstration, which blockaded streets around Parliament Hill in Ottawa for more than three weeks in early 2022.

Under Trump, Border Patrol arrests immigrants far from U.S.-Mexico border

The Trump administration is increasingly relying on Border Patrol agents to help carry out the president’s mass deportation plan and arrest immigrants in cities far from the nation’s southern border — a departure from the agency’s traditional role that some lawyers and advocates consider alarming.

In the past month, Border Patrol agents have swarmed a Los Angeles park on foot and horseback; taken immigrants into custody at a New York City courthouse; raided a cannabis farm in California’s Ventura County; and detained day laborers at Home Depot parking lots as far north as Sacramento.

Montreal Muslima Gets One Whole Day In Custody For Joining ISIS

Oumaima Chouay, who fled her home in Montreal nearly a decade ago to join ISIS in Syria, is the first person in Canada convicted for providing family support to a terrorist entity as a spouse.

Chouay was sentenced Monday to one day of custody, in addition to the 110 days she served in pretrial detention, according to the Public Prosecution Service of Canada (PPSC). The 29-year-old also received a three-year probation order.

The sentence was a joint recommendation from the Crown prosecution and Chouay’s lawyer, Dominique Shoofey.

All a Muslim terrorist has to do to avoid jail is fake sincerity in Canada.

Russia using children to design and test its military drones, investigation finds

Russian authorities have systematically involved children in the design and testing of drones for the country’s war in Ukraine through nationwide competitions that begin with innocent-seeming video games and end up with the most talented students headhunted by defence companies, an investigation has found.

The revelations, part of an investigation by the exiled Russian news outlet the Insider, are the latest to show just how much Russia’s leaders are dragging the country’s youth into the war effort in Ukraine, with “patriotic” and militarised education often spilling over into outright participation.

“The kids are actively involved in modelling components of systems for various drones,” one of the teenagers involved told a journalist. “I know of several people at least who were modelling UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle] components for major enterprises.”

A Chinese research vessel returns to Arctic waters — and it appears Canada is watching

The Canadian military and possibly the coast guard appear to have been keeping tabs on a Chinese research vessel as it returns to Arctic waters off Alaska for the second year in a row.

Data compiled by an independent researcher and ship tracker, Steffan Watkins, shows a Canadian air force CP-140 surveillance plane was flying in the vicinity of the Xue Long (Snow Dragon) 2 as it exited the Bering Strait on Sunday.

The aircraft, according to Watkins’s research, relocated to Anchorage, Alaska, from its base in Comox, B.C., on July 9. It has conducted four patrols since then, including the most recent one involving the vessel, which is China’s first domestically built polar research ship.
