Jack Mintz: Not another Liberal slush fund!

Rather than pay down the federal government’s debt, Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a $25-billion sovereign wealth fund (SWF), the Canada Strong Fund, which will join with private interests to invest in nation-building projects. It could grow even larger by selling a “retail investment product” to any Canadians who for some reason want to hold shares in politically-directed projects like high-speed rail, mining critical minerals and expanding the Port of Churchill.

US supreme court weighs whether protected status of Haitians and Syrians can be revoked

The US supreme court was hearing oral arguments on Wednesday over whether the Trump administration can strip the temporary protected status (TPS) of hundreds of thousands of Syrians and Haitians, under a program that has shielded them from deportation owing to safety concerns in their countries of origin.

People with TPS are given the permission to live and work in the US because the government has deemed their home countries to be unsafe because of war, political instability or natural disasters. In the past year, the Trump administration has attempted to cut the program for various countries, opening the door to the removal of hundreds of thousands of protected immigrants currently in the US.

WHISSELL: What if Carney wants the USMCA to expire?

The deadline of July 1 for the mandatory joint review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) is fast approaching. United States (US) protectionism is leading the Western world down a more transactional path, one where old economic partnerships are being redefined. This shift is causing a great deal of anxiety for Canadians as the future of trade remains uncertain.

Iranians Feel the Pain as Their Economy Descends Into a Death Spiral

Iranians Feel the Pain as Their Economy Descends Into a Death Spiral

War has imposed a heavy cost on Iran’s economy: more than a million people out of work, soaring food prices and a prolonged internet shutdown that has slammed online businesses.

The question is how much more pain Iran’s leaders are willing to tolerate as they try to negotiate a favorable end to the war.

Talks between the U.S. and Iran have stalled. American officials are betting that Iran will soon crack because of the deepening economic crisis. Iran is betting the U.S. will crack first and end its blockade of Iranian ports to calm global markets and bring down American gasoline prices.

Helmets and hard hats: A look at Canada’s plan to boost the military with skills training

Helmets and hard hats: A look at Canada’s plan to boost the military with skills training

The Liberal government’s spring economic update lays the foundation for a potential solution to two of the Canadian military’s most vexing problems — the dearth of equipment and skilled personnel.

Absent from the fiscal plan, however, was a specific accounting of how the country managed to meet the NATO benchmark target of two per cent of Canada’s gross domestic product.

The economic update released Tuesday proposes $250 million over five years for skilled trades training under the umbrella of the Canadian Armed Forces.

No doubt this scam will require foreign language study guides costing 250 Million Dollars & designed by a Liberal crony.

‘I don’t want to be part of a dictatorship’: the Americans queueing up to renounce their citizenship

‘I don’t want to be part of a dictatorship’: the Americans queueing up to renounce their citizenship

When Margot went to renounce her US citizenship earlier this year, she wasn’t able to do it in the UK, her home of 30 years. The waiting list to renounce US citizenship at the London consulate is more than 14 months. It’s a similar story in Sydney and most major Canadian cities. Many European cities currently have six-month waiting lists.

So Margot found herself in the lobby of the consulate in Ghent, Belgium. One wall was covered by a picture of Boston Harbour, where she was born. The other had three portraits: Donald Trump, JD Vance and Marco Rubio, their faces glistening – to her mind, with sadistic triumph (the lighting may have been a factor). Momentarily, she felt caught in a vice: everything she loved about her nation; everything she hated. Then she went in, swore under oath that she knew what she was doing, wasn’t being coerced, and wasn’t renouncing her citizenship for the purposes of tax avoidance. The official’s tone was neutral, slightly bored.

James Comey Just Got Indicted Again. Here’s Why.

If former FBI Director James Comey thought he was out of legal trouble, think again: he has just been indicted by the Justice Department. Details are limited, but this is happening, with Fox News reporting that it originates from his 2025 Instagram post, in which he seemingly called for the assassination of President Donald Trump, who avoided another incident at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday. Cole Allen, 31, attempted to storm the Washington Hilton ballroom with a shotgun and other weapons, aiming to target Trump and his top officials.

Michael Higgins: Canada’s most dangerous professor

Prof. Frances Widdowson has reserved a special place for the University of Lethbridge in her “Halls of Shame” list — the places she says are the worst for free speech and academic freedom.

Her view may be coloured by the fact that for treading the halls of that academy last week she was handcuffed and hit with a $600 fine for trespassing.
