How ‘fake news’ added — and then wiped — $4 trillion from the stock market in minutes

Unsourced claim that Donald Trump was considering 90-day pause on sweeping tariffs caused momentary chaos

Wall Street was braced for chaos when the US markets opened for trading on Monday, but no one could have anticipated the $4 trillion meltdown that ensued.

An unsourced claim that Donald Trump was mulling a 90-day pause on the sweeping tariffs he imposed on virtually all of America’s trading partners sent stocks flying upwards before plummeting back down at breakneck speed.

Trump-led U.S. an ‘unreliable partner’ for Canada, says expert group: ‘we’re dealing with an administration that doesn’t believe our country has a right to exist’

Former federal Progressive Conservative cabinet minister Perrin Beatty says he had planned to spend Easter with his wife, Julie, at the condominium they have owned for about 12 years in Naples, Florida. But he decided to return last week to Ottawa after United States President Donald Trump announced his “Liberation Day” reciprocal tariffs on April 2.

“We’re dealing with an administration that doesn’t believe that our country has a right to exist,” said Beatty before departing his winter home in a country whose president has repeatedly pushed the idea of annexing Canada as its 51st state.

Mystery of Russian web searches about Mannheim attack days before it happened

Russian internet users were searching for information about a terror attack in Germany several days before it occurred, according to an investigation that suggests Moscow may have had advance knowledge of the violence.

In May last year a rejected asylum seeker from Afghanistan killed a police officer and wounded five other people with a knife in the western city of Mannheim, as he apparently sought to assassinate a far-right critic of Islam.

Kelly McParland: Carney and Poilievre struggle to distinguish themselves

Elections are supposed to help voters differentiate between candidates so they can decide who to support. The idea is to get a clear grip on what the rival contestants are all about. But two weeks into the federal election campaign, differences between the two front-runners are less apparent than they once seemed. In style and personality they may be worlds apart, in their plans for running Canada there’s less substance than either might claim.

EU offers Trump removal of all industrial tariffs

BRUSSELS — The EU has offered the United States a “zero-for-zero” tariff scheme, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Monday, seeking to avoid a tit-for-tat trade war.

“We have offered zero-for-zero tariffs for industrial goods as we have successfully done with many other trading partners. Because Europe is always ready for a good deal. So we keep it on the table,” she told a press conference alongside Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

The Toronto Star says Jews are just like Trump and hating them is what makes us Canadian

Why Gaza matters to every Canadian in the federal election

As Canadians head into the federal election, much has been made of the key issues shaping the campaign: affordability, national security, trade and foreign relations. But one issue cuts across all of these — Gaza.

At first glance, many Canadians may see Gaza as a foreign issue, far removed from their daily lives. But it isn’t. The principles at stake in Gaza — respect for international law, human rights and the rules-based order — are the same principles that protect Canada in trade, security, and foreign policy.

Canada exists and thrives in a world where international law is respected. Our trade relationships, national security and economic stability depend on a rules-based order where smaller countries are not pushed aside by the whims of the powerful.

This is precisely why U.S. President Donald Trump is seen as a threat to Canada. His disregard for trade agreements, alliances and global norms puts Canadian industries, jobs and sovereignty at risk. The same logic applies to Gaza. If we allow powerful nations to violate international law with impunity, we weaken the very system that protects Canada’s interests.

THOMAS: Don’t expect changes from Carney’s Trudeau government redux

‘Who do you think was guiding the Trudeau government all these years?’

OK, the Trump tariff dump is in the rearview mirror, and we have a better idea of what to expect.

So, it’s time to put the Canadian federal election back in the headlines and what we can expect from that, as we navigate the hallways of promises, exaggerations and, too often, pure BS.

Why are sports cars being exempted from net zero rules?

You can carry on burning petrol and diesel in your car so long as it is a pricey, niche sports car. If you are a pleb who can only afford a family hatchback, on the other hand, you will have to convert to electric – and the government will pretend that it is saving you money. That just about sum up the government’s new policy on electric vehicles. The Zero Emission Vehicle mandate will be relaxed, but mostly for car manufacturers who produce fewer than 2,500 cars a year, who will be given a free pass. Given that these manufacturers – like Aston Martin – tend to be at the upper, more polluting end of the market, it is rather as if the government had just come up with a tax on airline travel which exempted private jets.

U.K. man fired for saying terrorists who murdered 1,200 Israelis are ‘violent and disgusting’

Damon Joshua, an employee of Severn Trent Water Supply in the U.K., has been fired from his job due to a social media post he put up in observance of the one-year anniversary of the Hamas attack on innocent Israelis.

On Oct. 7, 2024, the sewage worker took to an employee website and characterized those who raped, tortured, mutilated, and murdered 1,200 Israelis as a “group of violent and disgusting terrorists.”

For mildly — one might say, timidly — stating an obvious truth, he was let go within hours.

Advocate of Trump tariff playbook to speak at Canadian conservative think tank taking place during election campaign

A prominent Canadian conservative think tank has invited the top tariff power broker from Donald Trump’s first cabinet to a conference in Ottawa this week that includes a who’s who of premiers, former politicians and Conservative strategists.

Former U.S. trade representative Robert Lighthizer, who supports dramatically higher tariffs and dismisses concerns about tanking the global economy, will be the keynote speaker at the Canada Strong and Free Network conference.

Meet the global famine conspiracists

Are their fears coming true?

In the twilight of Joe Biden’s presidency, ex-rock star turned MAGA maven Ted Nugent posted an ominous message: “They are not ‘predicting’ food shortages. They are planning them.”

At around the same time, shit-posting Disney action hero and mixed martial artist Gina Carano spotted a grand historical pattern: “Mao attacked farmers. Stalin attacked farmers. Now, world governments are attacking farmers. Same group throughout history. It’s a playbook, it’s not a chance happening. Wake up.” Then Wide Awake Media posted an image of thousands of acres of “prime agricultural land” squandered by solar panels, captioned with a rhetorical question: “is this one of the reasons for the globalist war on agriculture?”

The women who help men abuse other women

Victims of Mohamed Fayed, the late owner of Harrods, speak of a familiar pattern: they would be plucked from obscurity, promoted from a job on the shop floor to the offices above, invited to Fayed’s luxury apartment and sexually assaulted or raped.

More than 100 women have made allegations against the Egyptian billionaire, whose alleged campaign of abuse is said to have spanned back to the 1970s. Ex-employees speak of Fayed’s behaviour as an open secret within Harrods: some say he was known to patrol the shop floor on the lookout for attractive young women to target.

One-third of Westerners support independence, joining US — if Liberals win federal election

A new Angus Reid poll shows support for Western independence remains significant, with many respondents indicating the outcome of the federal election is a significant factor.

About 30% of Albertans and 33% of Saskatchewanians said they would leave Canada if Mark Carney and the Liberals win the federal election on April 28 — otherwise, the numbers drop to 25% and 20% respectively.

But …

Scientists perform world’s first de-extinction to revive the dire wolf that vanished 12,000 years ago

Scientists have announced the first de-extinction of an animal species, reintroducing the dire wolf back into the world.

Colossal Biosciences, a genetic engineering company, birthed three dire wolves, naming them Romulus, Remus and Khaleesi in honor of the legendary creature made famous from the HBO hit series Game of Thrones.

However, the white-coated wolf once roamed North and South America before vanishing around 12,000 years ago likely to the disappearance of their prey.

“It’s not racist to take sovereignty seriously”—U.S. Border Patrol Agent Vincent ‘Rocco’ Vargas

Vincent “Rocco” Vargas was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, California. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and went on to serve three combat deployments with the 2nd Battalion of the elite 75th Ranger Regiment. In 2009 Vargas became a Federal Agent with the Department of Homeland Security, and was a medic with the Special Operations Group. After temporarily leaving his federal career for film and television, he returned to the Border Patrol’s Strategic Planning and Analysis Directorate (SPAD) in March 2025—while continuing to work with veterans, and as a writer,  entrepreneur and motivational speaker. He runs the popular Borderland and VinnyRoc podcasts.

Vincent Vargas is a giant of a man who fills the screen from his home ‘operations room’ throughout our interview. He refuels on protein bars as we talk, while making it clear just how plausible he was as an army sergeant (in real life) or as the Capitan Del Camino of a fictional outlaw biker gang (on Mayans M.C.). His fame acquired from appearing in films and on TV also guaranteed publicity for his SPAD appointment. While good-humoured—and slightly disappointed he can’t also offer me a protein bar—it’s clear he is entirely serious about going back into homeland security. Could he really be giving up acting to concentrate on a real-life role in Border Patrol?
