Maniac with meat cleaver attacks several kids in horrifying, bloody scene on NYC street – before he’s shot by NYPD cops: police

Four young girls were slashed with a meat cleaver in Brooklyn on Sunday morning when a relative went on a deranged and bloody rampage — before he was shot by cops, officials said.

Police rushed to a home on 84th Street around 10:15 a.m. after one of the victims — a wounded 11-year-old girl — locked herself in a room and called 911, telling the dispatcher that her uncle had stabbed her and her siblings.

How the Conservative and Liberal federal election campaigns are treating the media

On Wednesday morning, as Pierre Poilievre wrapped up the press conference portion of a Bay Street breakfast event, a clamour erupted at the back of the room. To those watching on TV, it sounded as if protesters had begun heckling the Conservative Leader. In fact, it was a handful of reporters, apparently frustrated by the campaign’s tight control of access, shouting questions they hoped Mr. Poilievre might answer.

The incident marked the second time tensions flared on the trail this week, after some campaign handlers attempted to physically restrain reporters trying to ask questions of Mr. Poilievre at a Tuesday morning event on a public wharf in St. John’s.

‘Liberation Day’—For Mexico

While most of the world was left shocked and dismayed by President Donald Trump’s tariff roll-out on “Liberation Day” earlier this week, at least one foreign government was quietly celebrating.

“This is great for the country,” Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum said the next day. Mexico and Canada, as part of the USMCA free trade agreement, avoided the imposition of any additional tariffs during Trump’s announcement Wednesday, while the average tariff rate on U.S. imports is set to skyrocket to 29 percent from just two percent previously.

In Canada’s Auto City, Tariffs Have Already Caused a Shutdown

Outside City Hall in Windsor, Ontario, it was apparent on Friday morning that at least one American thing wasn’t being boycotted. Fans dressed in Detroit Tigers clothing were gathering at a bus stop to cross the river to take in the team’s home opener.

Beyond the opening day festivities, however, it was a week of particularly bad news for Windsor, my hometown.

How much greener did Canada’s homes get? Report takes a closer look at federal rebate program

The federal government provided $2.6 billion for heat pumps, solar panels, insulation and other green upgrades to Canadians’ homes through the Canada Greener Homes Grant. But what difference did that actually make?

A new report released this week by the non-profit Green Communities Canada suggests the program didn’t do enough to meet Canada’s targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

That’s because “the savings aren’t deep enough and because we’re not doing enough retrofits,” said Kai Millyard, the group’s energy manager and co-author of the report.

GOLDSTEIN: Only Poilievre and Conservatives unequivocally condemn antisemitism

While antisemitism has always been present in Canada, this is the first Canadian election in decades where it has been normalized.

Riot police being called to Montreal’s McGill University after pro-Hamas demonstrators vandalized the university’s McConnell Engineering Building, targeted the dean’s office and blocked students from attending classes last week surprises no one any more.

Disney’s Uber Woke Snow White had higher carbon emissions than the latest Fast & Furious film

At a screening of the new Snow White movie in London last month, influencers walked through an artificial fairytale forest, complete with a full-size thatched cottage filled with models of furry animals. In the US, Disney paraded an actual bunny in a brown knitted jumper down the red carpet at the film’s Hollywood premiere.

But the film’s theme of being at one with nature seems not to have extended to the real-life environment, with company documents showing the making of Snow White generated more greenhouse gas emissions in the UK than the latest Fast & Furious film, despite the latter’s reliance on an array of gas-guzzling cars.

The devices are believed to have been planted by Moscow to try and gather intelligence on Britain’s four Vanguard submarines, which carry nuclear missiles.

It was a protest of quiet dignity but its message was heard around the world. Why Parties Ramped Up Candidate Purges Last week and Why a Surge of Attacks May Be Coming

Last week saw the Conservatives drop five candidates over comments they had made in the past, while three Liberal candidates were dismissed or resigned for the same reason.

The dismissals took place ahead of the April 7 deadline for candidates to register to run in the federal election.

If parties find past comments from candidates that may be problematic to their campaign and want to drop them, they will be unable to register replacements after April 7.

Which countries require military service for women?

Denmark is the latest country to introduce military conscription for women. On March 25, Copenhagen announced that young women who turn 18 after July 1 of this year could be drafted by national lottery starting in January 2026 if the military does not attract enough volunteers. The measure is being put into place two years earlier than planned amid rising geopolitical tensions in Europe.

Around 25% of voluntary recruits are currently women, according to the Danish Armed Forces. Compulsory military service, which was already in place for men, lasts between four and 12 months, depending on what recruits decide to do after their three-month basic training.
