China denies forced labour allegations amid fallout from Michael Ma’s comments

Camp Uyghur

China is again denying claims of forced labour in the country as calls grow for Prime Minister Mark Carney to clarify Canada’s stance on the issue amid fallout from comments made by Liberal MP Michael Ma that appeared to cast doubt on reported human rights abuses.

The Chinese Embassy in Canada pushed back on the allegation that forced labour is used in the production of Chinese electric vehicle components in a social media post Friday night, calling it a “blatant lie” that some are using to undermine the Canada-China EV deal.

Inside the Trans-Atlantic Trade in Iranian Weapons for Colombian Coke

In February last year, Antoine Kassis checked into the Windsor Golf Hotel & Country Club, a Victorian-style resort an hour north of Nairobi. Wearing an ill-fitting hooded sweatshirt, with gray stubbles and baggy eyes, he didn’t look like a typical upscale tourist.

The disheveled 58-year-old, who went by Tony, was a cousin of the recently deposed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. He had traveled to Kenya planning to meet a supposed arms inspector from a Colombian rebel group and complete a $14 million deal to import 500 kilos of cocaine to Syria in return for military-grade weapons supplied by Iran and Russia.

Kassis didn’t know the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency had been watching him for two years. As he waited in a cafe, U.S. agents accompanied by Kenyan police approached him. Two months later he was extradited to the U.S., ending a lengthy sting operation.

No Kings protesters across the US rally against Donald Trump

Large protests against the Trump administration have taken place in cities across the US, marking the third iteration of No Kings rallies that have previously drawn crowds into the millions.

Organisers say they are protesting against policies imposed by US President Donald Trump, including the war in Iran, federal immigration enforcement and the rising cost of living.

“Trump wants to rule over us as a tyrant. But this is America, and power belongs to the people – not to wannabe kings or their billionaire cronies,” organisers said.

Should Mark Carney be doubling Canada’s defense spending in response to today’s security threats?

Few policy choices shape a country more profoundly than decisions about sovereignty, security and military might.

Those questions are now at the centre of a debate triggered by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s pledge to meet a NATO defence spending target of five per cent of GDP by 2035 and the government’s new defence strategy.

Thousands march against far right in London in biggest ever multicultural protest

Tens of thousands of people gathered in London to march against the far right in the biggest multicultural demonstration in UK history.

Organisers claimed half a million people had travelled to the capital for Saturday’s Together Alliance march. Police estimated the turnout was closer to 50,000, although they admitted it was difficult to judge the number due to the widespread nature of the crowd.

Beginning in Park Lane, more than 100 charities, campaign groups and trade unions marched to Trafalgar Square via Whitehall in a show of unity against far-right politics.

Government Bug Bet Bombs: Ottawa’s investment in world’s largest cricket farm couldn’t survive ‘yuck factor’

The business of insect farming was supposed to grow big and fast.

In London, Ont., that promise took shape in Aspire Food Group Canada. Billed as the world’s largest cricket farm, it was a 150,000-square-foot, fully automated facility designed to house billions of insects and produce millions of kilograms of protein each year.

Crickets are touted as a low-carbon protein source, requiring less farmland than traditional livestock and offering the potential to address world food insecurity.

EU Parliament Told Continent ‘On Track For Civil War‘

Many government officials already perceive the horrific implications of Europe’s nation states losing their self-belief and descending into polar factionalism, with the continued existence of Europe or its constituent parts in question, but understand that speaking of it openly remains career suicide, a conference at the European Parliament has heard.

It is “a possibility that is quite close” that the British people will pass into history “like the Canaanites or the Arcadians”, and it is an open question whether there will be a Europe in 50 years’ time, a European Parliament conference heard from a panel of expert speakers.

UN watchdog bashes Mark Carney’s ‘procedural theatre’ on Iran war

Few people can make tyrants look over their shoulder, but Hillel Neuer has built a career doing exactly that. The Montreal-born, Geneva-based lawyer and human rights crusader has become one of the most unrelenting watchdogs of the United Nations, exposing hypocrisy and defending the world’s dissidents in some of the globe’s most repressive regimes.

As executive director of UN Watch — the Geneva-based NGO known for holding dictatorships to account within the UN system — Neuer has been called “feared and dreaded by the world’s dictatorships” (Tribune de Genève) and “the most hated man at the UN” (Bild).

Trump weighs new ‘pay to play’ Nato

US president considers blocking members of military alliance from decision-making unless 5 per cent spending target hit

Donald Trump is considering a shake-up of Nato designed to punish members who do not meet his funding demands.

The US president is examining a “pay-to-play model” that could block allies from decision-making, including when the bloc goes to war.

It is one of several ideas Mr Trump is weighing up after allies rejected his demand to send warships to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Sources close to the president said he was also considering pulling US troops out of Germany – a move that he has considered since returning to office last year.

I agree NATO nations have used the US as a sucker and that includes Canada’s failure to pull it’s weight.

He should not have demanded that NATO members join in the war against Iran.

Even though the world will benefit from the defeat of Iran’s Mullah regime Trump can’t expect assistance on demand for a war NATO states are simply unwilling and incapable of fighting especially those harboring significant Muslim 5th Columns. France and England are barely able to control their own streets.

NATO is a paper tiger, a drain on US resources and its resentful anti-American members dubious allies making withdrawal a reasonable response.

Maybe a slap in the face is the right approach, maybe not regardless there’s gonna be a lot of hurt feelings over this!

Leaked Chat Exposes Antisemitism Row in UK Green Party

Green Party activists are facing mounting backlash after leaked WhatsApp messages revealed members describing Jews as “an abomination to this planet” and promoting conspiracy claims about attacks on Jewish targets.

The messages, first reported by The Telegraph, come from a Greens for Palestine group chat and have prompted calls for party leader Zack Polanski to take action, amid warnings of growing antisemitism within the party’s activist base.

In one exchange, a participant wrote that Jews were “an abomination to this planet” during a discussion about Israel and Zionism. Other messages show members claiming Jews “murder, bomb and starve” children and arguing activists should stop using the term ‘Zionists’ out of fear of being labelled antisemitic.

‘Canada as a brand has suffered’: Post-secondary schools react to AG report on international students

A little more than an hour outside of Ottawa, the small town of Perth, Ont. is dotted on roadways and in windows with signs that say “Save our College.”

The town is hoping there will be a resolution after Algonquin College announced the closure of its Perth campus last year, among other cuts, citing a multi-million dollar deficit and the federal cap on international students as factors. This month, the school approved cuts to 30 more programs.

“Of course, it’s an economic advantage to the community, because you have students here buying groceries, renting rooms and so on. But it’s that the type of college with the heritage masonry and the heritage carpentry has been here for so long. It’s so well known, it fits in well with the heritage of Perth,” Mayor Judy Brown told CTV News.

Police force that sent dozen officers to throw IT boss in a cell over blog post criticising senior officers is being sued

A police force that paid £20,000 compensation to a couple arrested over a school WhatsApp group is being sued by a company director thrown in a cell over a blog post.

A dozen Hertfordshire officers arrived at the home of IT boss Sam Smith after the force received complaints from two Facebook group members.

Mr Smith’s house was searched on March 8 last year, his devices were seized and he spent a night in a cell at Hatfield police station.
