Sanctions Are Not Enough
Ever since last year, when Vladimir Putin began preparing for an invasion of Ukraine, President Biden has tried to deter him. Biden tried to reason with the Russian autocrat. He released declassified intelligence to rally the world against the imminent threat. He supported French president Emmanuel Macron’s last-ditch attempt at diplomacy. He warned Russia that a war would be met with harsh economic sanctions.
Nothing worked. Negotiations failed. So-called “deterrence through disclosure” had no effect. The threat of punishment carried no weight. The invasion began in the early hours of February 24. The largest military action undertaken on the continent of Europe since World War II is underway. Anyone who pretends to know what will happen next is kidding themselves.

TORONTO – For the third time this month, students at a Toronto public elementary school have performed the Hitler salute in class, this time targeting a Jewish teacher in a Grade 6 classroom.
The latest incident occurred Thursday at Pleasant Public School in North York, Ont. The victim, a substitute teacher who regularly works at the school, was approached in the classroom by two male students who performed the salute and kept their arms raised for a lengthy period despite the teacher’s request to stop.
“They knew exactly what they were doing,” the teacher told B’nai Brith. “I felt attacked. They kept their hands up for a long time. It was blatant and so obvious.”

The UK repeated calls on Friday for Russia to be banned from the Swift payment network, which is pivotal for the smooth transaction of money worldwide.
Defence Secretary Ben Wallace told the BBC: “Britain wants the Swift system to be turned off for Russia. But unfortunately the Swift system is not in our control. It is not a unilateral decision.”

Ontario reports 39 net new COVID-19 deaths; hospitalizations hit low for 2022
Ontario reported 39 net new deaths on Friday, as total hospitalizations in the province hit their lowest point of 2022.
Ministry of Health spokesperson Alexandra Hilkene says five of the deaths occurred on Wednesday, another five occurred on Tuesday and 25 others occurred in the 26 days prior to that.
297 people are in ICU with #COVID19. 76% of patients admitted to the ICU were admitted for COVID-19 and 24% were admitted for other reasons but have tested positive for COVID-19.
There are 2,427 new cases of COVID-19.

Ontario’s top public health official says that he anticipates that the mask mandate will be lifted “simultaneously” across most sectors when it is safe to do so, rather than on a piecemeal basis.
Quebec has announced a plan to lift the mask mandate in elementary and secondary school classrooms by March 14 en route to eventually scrapping it for other indoor public settings as well.
“The FBI is investigating these cases as racially or ethnically motivated violent extremism and hate crimes,” a press release dated February 23, 2022, declared. It does not take much digging to poke holes in the “racism” narrative. On any given day local sources report bomb threats all over the country. Canada’s cyber spy agency is warning organizations, including power companies and banks, to shore up their defences against Russia-based cyber threat activity as the Western world responds to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
In a statement Thursday, the Communications Security Establishment said that “in light of Russia’s ongoing, unjustified military offensive in Ukraine,” it “strongly encourages all Canadian organizations to take immediate action and bolster their online cyber defences.”
