The Panic Pandemic

Fearmongering from journalists, scientists, and politicians did more harm than the virus.

The United States suffered through two lethal waves of contagion in the past year and a half. The first was a viral pandemic that killed about one in 500 Americans—typically, a person over 75 suffering from other serious conditions. The second, and far more catastrophic, was a moral panic that swept the nation’s guiding institutions.

Georgetown’s Bridge Initiative: Manufactured ‘Islamophobia’ Webinar demonizes the West and presents a pollyannaish view of Islam.

Georgetown University’s Bridge Initiative, a project of its Saudi-founded Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding (ACMCU), claims it exists to combat the pernicious spread of “Islamophobia.” ACMCU’s June 30 webinar featuring former Bridge research fellow Jordan Denari Duffner offered further evidence that Bridge’s real mission is to depict all Muslims as victims and silence critical commentary on Islam. Like the term “Islamophobia” itself, Bridge exists to end, rather than advance, debate.

‘You may deport me but you can’t silence the truth’: Katie Hopkins takes parting shot at Australian authorities after having her visa revoked for her slating hotel quarantine and joking about taunting staff

Katie Hopkins has made a parting shot at Australian authorities, telling them they ‘cannot silence the truth’ after she was deported for ‘joking’ about breaching quarantine rules.

The former Apprentice star, 46, was today deported from Australia after mocking hotel quarantine rules and calling Covid lockdowns the ‘greatest hoax in human history.’

But in a huge backlash from Australians, the commentator had her ‘critical skills’ visa torn up by the federal government and was handed a $1,000 (£536) fine for answering the door of her room in quarantine naked and without a face mask in violation of quarantine rules.

Cynical NY Times Whines GOP ‘Ready to Pounce’ on Biden Migrant Policy

The New York Times front page on Saturday reported that “Biden Is Facing New Pressures Over Migrants.” So far so good.

But the Times painted the Biden-encouraged rush to America’s southern border, where the number of apprehensions have hit record levels, as less an actual crisis and more of a worrisome political issue for Democrats, with the threat of Republicans (yes) “seizing” on it and hurting Biden and Democrats in the 2022 congressional elections. They also downplayed Biden’s campaign promises that helped fuel the border crisis.

Is Western Europe Really Turning to the Right?

A large-scale and widely-noted survey, “The Conversion of Europeans to the Values of the Right,” suggests that Western Europe is trending conservative. But a close look at the survey data finds that not to be the case.

La Fondation pour l’innovation politique (or the Fondapol Foundation), which calls itself a “liberal, progressive, and European think tank,” surveyed 7,603 respondents in Great Britain, France, Germany and Italy between January 20 and February 10, 2021. In striking contrast to historic trends, it found the young to be more conservative than the old, suggesting a move toward conservativism.

Norway’s beach handball team REFUSES to wear bikini bottoms and faces a fine after competing in non-regulation shorts instead

Norway’s beach handball team is facing a fine after the players refused to wear bikini bottoms in a match, instead competing in non-regulation shorts.

The Norwegian handball federation said Monday it was ready to pay the possible fine after the women’s team defied official regulations.

The Scandinavians wore shorts instead of the bikini required by the International Handball Federation’s (IHF) rules in their bronze medal match against Spain at the European Beach Handball Championship in Varna, Bulgaria, on Sunday.

I’m concerned their new uniform may reduce competitiveness by restricting mobility.

Ottawa tested facial recognition on millions of travellers at Toronto’s Pearson airport in 2016

In an effort to identify potential deportees, the federal government quietly tested facial recognition technology on millions of unsuspecting travellers at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport in 2016.

The six-month initiative, meant to pick out people the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) suspected might try to enter the country using fake identification, is detailed in a document obtained by The Globe and Mail through a freedom of information request. The project is the largest known government deployment of the technology in Canada to date.

Mary Simon’s lack of French prompts investigation after 400 complaints: watchdog

Canada’s official languages watchdog is opening an investigation after receiving more than 400 complaints in nearly two weeks about the appointment of prominent Inuk leader Mary Simon as governor general.

Simon does not speak French, which is enshrined in the Official Languages Act as one of Canada’s two official languages. She has said she is committed to learning French on the job but was denied the chance to do so while attending a federal day school in her youth.

So there are 400 cranks who “care” about this.
