Canadians avoiding U.S. travel amid new border rules, say fingerprinting is invasive

Canadians are cutting back sharply on trips to the United States this year, citing new border rules, safety concerns, and political tensions as reasons to stay closer to home.

New research from the Angus Reid Institute finds that only about one-in-10 Canadians have made multiple trips south in the past 12 months, down from 19% in 2023 and 21% in 2017.

Memories of the Way We Were

Conservative commentary on how Western liberalism has lost its way tends to be almost exclusively focused on the changes that half a century of Left-liberal ‘progress’ have wrought. But it is surely equally important to be clear about what is felt to have been lost in the process. Here are my own.

To be clear, these are the recollections and impressions of someone growing up in 1950s and 60s England. They are not a depiction of some prelapsarian ideal world. People today who would identify as socially conservative would, I think, feel an affinity with much but by no means all of it.

Mark Carney’s promise on housing was to build build build. What happened?

This week’s federal Budget sends a signal to Canadians that the government’s thinking on housing has evolved. Instead of trying to increase housing supply, it is placing greater emphasis on reducing housing demand.

The promises made in the Liberal platform to build more have been watered down: housing targets are being softened, and the government has adopted a hard line on immigration, making a direct linkage between population growth and housing shortages.

Immigration remains unsustainably high and while a downturn in housing demand is occurring a pronounced shortage is expected in 2 years or so.

Kimmel’s Wife Shuns Trump-Voting Family

One of the hallmarks of conservative thinking is the acknowledgement that politics isn’t everything. Some things transcend – or should transcend – that earthbound, combative cesspit: God, family, and country, to name three. Of course, politics necessarily comes into play in the ways we approach and engage with those transcendent things. But conservatives by and large are able to keep politics compartmentalized in our daily lives.

A right-wing coup at the BBC? Don’t make me laugh

Have you heard? There’s been a right-wing coup at the BBC. Apparently, a ‘cabal’ of ‘populists’ has just succeeded in ousting director-general Tim Davie and CEO of news and current affairs Deborah Turness. That, remarkably, is the high-status take following the shock resignations of Davie and Turness last night, following the outrageous, flagrant examples not simply of BBC bias, but of it pushing flat-out misinformation, detailed in an internal memo leaked to the Telegraph.

Carney’s Floor-Crossing Campaign. A Media-Staged Bid for Majority Rule That Erodes Democracy While Beijing Hovers

OTTAWA — On budget day, Ottawa’s reporters were sequestered in the traditional lock-up, combing through hundreds of pages, when Politico detonated a perfectly timed scoop: Conservative MP Chris d’Entremont was weighing a jump to Mark Carney’s Liberals. Within hours, he crossed, moving the government to within two seats of a majority — one that would guarantee Carney’s hold on power until 2029 — without Canadians casting a single ballot.

‘Let’s Show Reality’: Hashtag Goes Viral After Identitarian Activist Arrest

The arrest of influencer Jean-Eudes Gannat, who is being prosecuted for posting a video showing Afghan migrants camped outside a supermarket in his town, continues to cause controversy. The widespread outrage over the attacks against him, even beyond France’s borders, has given rise to a movement on X called “Let’s show reality,” which aims to show, with supporting images, the prevalence of immigration and population change in society.

Tweet Translation (Sorta)

SUMMONED AT THE PROSECUTOR’S REQUEST as early as this afternoon for this innocuous video posted last night on TikTok. Possibly for a custody hearing according to my contact.

Describing reality is forbidden!

Since the truth is disturbing, I ask you to spread it as widely as possible and commend me to your prayers in the face of this umpteenth political-judicial harassment.

REDMAN: The government must stop politicizing Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day should be a time to honour all those who served and died for Canada. Instead, once again, it has been politicized, this year by a government-staged apology aimed at casting shame on the military rather than celebrating its sacrifice.

Once a year, we pause to remember those who died in uniform in service to our country and in defence of our rights and freedoms, and our very way of life.

I’m shocked the LPC didn’t have a Transgender Remembrance day.

A retreat from opportunity: Is the Canadian dream still alive?

For generations, the Canadian covenant was straightforward: Work hard, play by the rules, and you’ll climb higher than your parents did. Merit, not inheritance, would determine success. That certainty is eroding.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre’s persistent claim that “Canada is broken” resonates because it captures a growing anxiety that effort no longer guarantees advancement. The sentiment transcends party lines.

In early 2025, Policy Horizons Canada (the federal government’s own foresight agency) released projections for 2040 where “upward social mobility is almost unheard of” and “downward social mobility might become the norm.” This scenario challenges the foundation of Canadian identity.

A long read but packed with data. Sadly this century will most certainly not belong to Canada or what remains of it.

A Town With Men in Hiding, in a Nation Desperate for Soldiers

Ukraine faces a major draft evasion problem, but no place is quite like Vylkove, a Danube River town where men of draft age have all but vanished, many of them trying to avoid military service.

Draft officers picked Ivan up at a traffic stop and dropped him off at a training base, but he went absent without leave from the army after three days. Since then, he has been hiding at home in Vylkove, a small town in southernmost Ukraine, rarely stepping outside.

Almost four years after the full-scale Russian invasion, Ukraine faces the twin challenges of not having enough troops and men avoiding military service. Many men of draft age, 25 to 60, have broken the law that prohibits most of them from leaving the country, while others play a cat-and-mouse game with conscription officers or just hunker down at home.

The unique geography and history of Vylkove, a run-down Danube River fishing port, have made it an exaggerated version of Ukraine in miniature, where draft-age men have all but vanished.

Revealed: The real reason Canada’s trade deal collapsed

Doug Ford, the Ontario Premier, was moments from taking the stage at a trade conference in Toronto when organisers announced an unexpected guest.

Beaming in from Washington, DC, Howard Lutnick, Donald Trump’s commerce secretary, had joined to speak on the escalating trade rift between the US and Canada.

Mr Lutnick’s tone, those present say, was aggressive and his message clear; automotive manufacturing, the pride of Ontario, was coming back to America.

‘National embarrassment’: Canada is no longer a country that has eliminated measles

In the old days we exiled them from the village.

Canada no longer can claim it has eliminated the most infectious virus known to medicine after the Pan American Health Organization announced Monday it has revoked the country’s measles elimination status.

The decision comes after Canada failed to contain spread of the same viral strain of measles for more than one year.
