Are Canadians going to get behind Mark Carney’s ‘generational’ budget?

“Generational” is the Carney government’s adjective of choice at this moment of consequence. The word appeared 11 times in the prepared text of François Philippe-Champagne’s budget speech and another 45 times in the 493-page budget document.

It is a word apparently meant to speak to both the gravity of the country’s situation and the bigness of this government response.

“This is not a time for small plans,” Champagne writes in the budget’s foreword.

‘Generational’ as in Generational decline.

If your goal is to elect a Canadian Mamdani then 11 years of LPC governance and this budget will do the trick.

Migrants given asylum despite being accused of sexual offences, whistleblower claims

Migrants who have been accused of sex offences and other crimes are being granted asylum anyway, a whistleblower has claimed.

A senior caseworker has told The Telegraph that Home Office staff can approve claims from asylum seekers charged with crimes, as long as the offence for which they are being prosecuted does not merit a prison sentence of 12 months or more.

She cited a case where she said she was disciplined after refusing to approve an Afghan man’s application because he had been arrested several times for indecently exposing himself in a children’s play area.

Trump and Mamdani have drawn battle lines — how will they fight?

As Zohran Mamdani becomes the 111th mayor of New York, Republicans and Democrats are preparing for a political clash for the ages. The 34-year-old socialist (about to become one of the most well-known Democrats in the USA) is on a collision course with the US president.

On paper, the two New Yorkers couldn’t be more different. Trump, the 79-year-old former real estate baron, lived it up in Manhattan in the 1990s, calling Fifth Avenue his home. Mamdani is a social media savvy former housing counsellor from Queens, who has promised to “freeze the rent” for people living in the roughly 30 per cent of city units designated as “rent stabilised”.

Heads should roll at BBC: leaked dossier reveals doctoring of Trump video and accusations of bias in Gaza coverage

The BBC is facing calls to sack its director-general and other senior executives following accusations of “serious and systemic” editorial bias.

The Telegraph has published revelations from a leaked dossier written by a whistleblower and sent to BBC board members that details numerous instances of apparent bias at the broadcaster.

The examples include a Panorama documentary that doctored a Donald Trump speech and that BBC Arabic “minimised Israeli suffering” in its coverage of the war with Hamas to “paint Israel as the aggressor”.

Friedrich Merz says Syrians no longer have reason for asylum in Germany

Syrians no longer have reason to be granted asylum in Germany after the end of their country’s civil war, according to Friedrich Merz, who said they will instead be encouraged to return to help with the reconstruction of their homeland.

During Syria’s 14-year civil war, Germany took in more refugees than any other country in the EU, but the chancellor and others in his coalition cabinet argue that the situation has changed since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government 11 months ago.

Merz said late on Tuesday that he expected many of the more than 1 million Syrians living in Germany would voluntarily return home.

The Trudeau Disaster

In 1931 the British Parliament passed the Statute of Westminster. For all practical purposes this statute granted legislative independence to the self-governing Dominions of the British Empire, which at the time basically meant Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the Irish Free State and Newfoundland. The gist of this very famous statute was that the UK Parliament could no longer legislate for a Dominion without its consent. They were of equal status to the UK. And of these old Dominions, Canada and Australia were the glittering stars. These two countries had everything before them. They went on to perform brilliantly in World War II. Their post-war fortunes included producing some of the highest standards of living on Earth as well as being amongst the most free. Even as late as 2015 Canada’s two richest provinces were, in per capita terms, comparable to the top 10 of US states. And Australia had comparatively cheap electricity, low debt and high per capita wealth.

UPS plane crash leaves at least 7 dead, 11 injured after fiery explosion at Louisville’s Muhammad Ali International Airport

At least seven people were killed and 11 injured when a UPS plane crashed in a colossal, fiery explosion — leaving a long trail of flames and destruction — shortly after taking off from Louisville’s Muhammad Ali International Airport on Tuesday evening, according to officials and wild footage.

Four people on the ground were killed and the three people who were onboard the flight are presumed dead, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said. The numbers were expected to grow as emergency crews combed the scene for additional victims through the night, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear warned.

Tasha Kheiriddin: Liberals need to convince our kids to enlist in the military

Canada’s young people are falling behind. According to Statistics Canada, the unemployment rate for those aged 15 to 24 sits at 14.2 per cent, more than double the national average. The unemployment rate among youth attending school is 17.1 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points from last September. Among those youth who are working, many are under-employed, bouncing between short-term contracts or part-time jobs that barely cover the costs of rent or school. Add to that, AI eliminating entry level jobs and an economy braced for more tariffs, and the employment prospects for young people look increasingly bleak.
