Why U.S. tariffs for Canada and others won’t go away anytime soon

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Prime Minister Mark Carney’s team arrived in Washington this week with high hopes for a trade breakthrough, but even with Dominic LeBlanc, the minister responsible for Canada-U.S. trade, still in talks late into the week before heading home on Friday, Canada’s bid for tariff relief appears to remain out of reach. So why is Washington insistent on a tariff-laden trade framework?

Chicago: Violent insurrectionist shot by US border patrol after car ramming ICE agents indicted by federal grand jury

A Chicago woman shot multiple times by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents was recently indicted by a grand jury on federal charges of impeding a federal officer with a deadly weapon.

Prosecutors allege Marimar Martinez, 30, rammed the vehicle of federal agents with her own before they shot her, which they say was an act of self-defense. They also claim Martinez was armed.

Martinez’s lawyer, Christopher Parente, said footage from one of the agent’s body-worn cameras contradicted that account, and Martinez will plead not guilty at an arraignment scheduled in the coming days.

How Canada got immigration right for so long – and then got it very, very wrong

Between 2021 and 2024, the United States had the highest level of immigration in its history.

That was the conclusion of a New York Times analysis published in late 2024. It estimated that over the four years of President Joe Biden’s administration, about eight million people had immigrated. This movement of people, powered by asylum claimants crossing the Mexican border, represented, said the Times, “a faster pace of arrivals than during any other period on record, including the peak years of Ellis Island, when millions of Europeans came to the United States.”

“Even after taking into account today’s larger U.S. population, the recent surge is the most rapid since at least 1850.”

Canada Sees Increase in Police-Reported Violent Crime as US Rates Fall

The disparity in police-reported violent crime between Canada and the United States has decreased in recent years, largely due to an uptick in major assaults recorded north of the border.

A Statistics Canada study examining crime trends from 1998 to 2023 found that the incidence of police-reported violent crimes for every 100,000 residents remains higher in the United States than in Canada. However, the violent crime rate is rising at a much quicker pace in Canada.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the measures at a news conference Friday in his home riding of Nepean, Ont., where he also promised to extend the Canada Strong Pass over the holiday season and the summer of 2026.

“In the budget, we will have to make responsible and pragmatic choices, and, yes, difficult decisions,” Carney said.

Germany Punishes Professor for Daring To Discuss National Identity

Germany’s highest administrative court has confirmed a disciplinary penalty against intelligence professor Martin Wagener over his book on national identity, saying the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) acted lawfully when it cut his pay by ten per cent for two years.

Wagener’s book, Kulturkampf um das Volk (Culture War Over the People), discusses Germany’s national identity and criticises official approaches to multiculturalism. The BND accused him of insulting citizens with immigrant backgrounds and breaking the duty of moderation required of public officials.
