‘Kickback scheme’ saw $30M stolen before alleged $11.6M COVID-19 fraud, Ontario government claims

The Ontario bureaucrat fired after an alleged fraud involving $11.6 million in COVID-19 funds was the kingpin in an elaborate “kickback” scheme that stole at least $30 million more from the government, court documents say.

Sanjay Madan was terminated in November from his $176,608-a-year job as a Ministry of Education computer specialist after the alleged theft of $11.6 million in Support for Families funds. That money has since been recovered.

But in an amended statement of claim filed earlier this month, the government is also seeking an additional amount “estimated to be at least $30 million” that was allegedly pilfered since 2011.
