Get married, have babies: how China is tackling population decline

China has announced a scheme to try to shift its culture towards childbearing and marriage as its four major cities declared their populations to be in decline for the first time.

Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen all recorded population declines for last year and the number of newborn babies across China fell to a record low below ten million.

The “new-era marriage and childbearing culture” is an ambitious attempt to alter the public view of marriage and family and create broad cultural change.
