DR Sucharit Bhakdi is a US-born Thai citizen who studied medicine in Germany, specialised in immunology and infectious diseases at the Max Planck Institute in Freiburg and became professor and chair of the Institute of Medical Microbiology at the University of Mainz from 1990 until his retirement in 2012.
