In June 1991, a major eruption from the Mount Pinatubo volcano sent ash clouds 25 miles high into the atmosphere above the Philippines. The impact was so powerful that the falling ash cloud dimmed the sun, temporarily cooling the world as much as 0.6C over the next two years.
