A Venezuelan prison run by its inmates like a small town, complete with a zoo, a disco and a swimming pool, has been cleared out by government authorities in an operation involving 11,000 security personnel.
The Tocorón prison, about two hours outside the capital, Caracas, has for years been what local aid organisations euphemistically called “self-run” — meaning that gangs, rather than the prison guards, were in charge.
Videos emerged whilst security forces were clearing the Tocoron prison in Aragua today showing a zoo that was inside the prison grounds, prisoners families including children were also living in a barrio inside the prison. #Venezuela pic.twitter.com/zpQo4Y1gYV
